WattCarbon is hiring a Data Engineer to build out the data ingestion and modeling pipeline for our energy decarbonization platform.

What We Want from You

As an early hire, this is an opportunity to be creative and have a big impact on the design of our Python-based data pipeline/ETL stack.

  • You should be able to build scalable data integrations and ETL pipelines - we will be ingesting data from dozens of suppliers and electricity meter data from hundreds of thousands of meters.
  • You will be tasked with ingesting diverse datasets (such as weather data and modeled buildings dataset data) for the purposes of downstream modeling.
  • You write readable code that makes it easy for other engineers to integrate into broader systems.
  • You will need to interact with clients to work out specific data intake requirements (especially at first), while working towards building pipelines that can be eventually executed by non-engineers.

We are also looking for some other skills.

  • Experience with formative data pipeline construction is a plus, as this hire will design, develop, and create processes in addition to writing the code. You should know how to keep it only as complicated as necessary.
  • General data science/modeling experience (or even interest) would be a plus, as this work will be used for modeling and prediction for the electricity and carbon impacts of buildings, heat pumps, photovoltaics and wind farms.
  • While contextual knowledge isn’t required, any experience with energy data, energy data forecasting, energy data modeling, and energy efficiency savings modeling would be a plus.

It is important to us that you work well within our team and evidence that you have helped others grow will be weighed heavily in our screening process.

About WattCarbon

WattCarbon has launched the first clean energy market aimed at rapidly scaling distributed energy technology, including rooftop solar & storage, electrification, and demand response. Our buildings are responsible for 40% of US and global emissions. By scaling distributed clean energy, we can eliminate these emissions today. We partner with climate-driven companies & organizations, directing funding towards these technologies to lower costs, accelerate deployment, and promote energy equity across the US.

The Company You Will Join

We are a seed stage startup backed by some of the most respected climate investors on the planet (True Ventures, Jetstream, Village Global, Looking Glass, Keiki Capital, Greensoil PropTech Ventures, and others); you would be the fifth engineer and ninth team member. We are open to any applicant who lives in the US - you should be comfortable working in a fully distributed, remote-first company. Our team lives in several different cities (and one RV). We prioritize personal growth and professional satisfaction and encourage applications from individuals who want to have an outsized impact on a consequential problem.

Company Culture

We start with a belief in each other and in the reason for our work.

We generally subscribe to the idea that Marx was correct about the alienation of labor and we organize ourselves purposefully to provide flexibility around family commitments, ensure opportunities for substantive input into business decisions, and prioritize personal growth. Our company’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is represented by its remote-first principles, through intentionality in recruitment, hiring, and retention efforts, through company benefits and pay practices, and through an expectation that we will treat every individual with dignity, respect, and compassion.

We work in a distributed and fully-remote environment. In our day-to-day work, we operate with a high degree of trust for each other and over-communicate when the path forward seems unclear. We hold a regular weekly engineering planning meeting, a company-wide meeting on Fridays, and less frequent cross-team 1:1s but we also recognize that focus time is important and remove unnecessary meetings. We also meet up in person on a quarterly basis at rotating locations around the US.

We take our time when we do work, as we want to provide ourselves with learning opportunities and room to improve processes as we develop new areas of the company. We are committed to treating mistakes as learning events and assuming best intentions rather than assigning blame. We learn as we go and we are okay with deleting as much code as we’re writing. We share our successes, stresses, and mistakes as a team and celebrate individual contributions.

Compensation

The base pay range for this position is $130,000-$145,000 plus company equity. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including work experience and may vary from these numbers.

Next Steps
