What is Ocean Ledger?

💪 An end-to-end monitoring platform for marine conservation & restoration

Ocean Ledger is a pioneering research spin-out set to change how marine conservation and restoration (local or national scale) are set up, validated, and monitored. Today, the primary mechanism to invest in marine conservation is through the blue carbon market. While there is signficant demand from governments and corporates, this is stifled by a lack of high-integrity projects due to key technical gaps. Project developers are cost-constrained, limiting the scale & robustness of their projects, while private sector buyers lack the confidence & assurance to invest.

Harnessing our unique technology development that combines earth observation, AI, and field data, Ocean Ledger can set a new standard for investable marine conservation by providing standardized, robust monitoring that aligns the needs of project developers, verifying bodies (i.e., Plan Vivo), and buyers. This technology was developed by our co-founder, Dimos Traganos, an expert in blue carbon remote sensing through a tech transfer project at the German Aerospace Center ($900K in funding). Our proprietary algorithms and framework have been trained by mapping 30 countries (306,000 sq km), and were successfully deployed in the Seychelles to help establish their nationally-determined contributions.

Our mission is to make it easier, faster, and cheaper for governments & businesses to engage in high-quality marine conservation - through environmental stewardship or blue carbon financing. We envision a world where coastal ecosystems receive the attention they deserve by providing the tools and incentives.

What we do

We use technology to help project developers streamline the technical verification steps required at various stages in the process - from implementation to validation and annual reporting. We are building an end-to-end solution that provides them with tools to effectively collect data in the field, combine this with state-of-the-art remote sensing, and integrate this into project documentation and marketing tools. Starting with our proprietary coastal accounting software, we will pair this with field collection tools that will optimize and standardize the entire process. To scale our efforts, we are building a pipeline of buyers and local project operators, helping unlock $50bn in market demand. No one else has the niche expertise of combining remote sensing with marine ecology (across all ecosystem types) - it's our secret power and we're going to use it to be a first-mover in the space.

What we care about:

  • Transparency: We don't care for hierarchy. We treat every idea and interaction equally. We are honest about what it will take - no matter what. With our customers, each other and ourselves.
  • Rigour: We have a sleeves rolled up attitude. Just like our projects, we get stuck in to build the business we believe in.
  • Big-picture optimism: Our team, our culture and our product should spark joy. Even when the going gets tough, we remember the small acts of kindness.
  • Bravery: We create spaces where people are empowered to up-tools, build confidence, unlock creativity and try something new. We challenge social norms around who has the right to certain skills and certain spaces.
  • Legacy: We consider the long term impact on the planet in every decision. We want our business to leave our people, our customers and the world in a better place than we found them.

🚀 We have traction

We are backed a Founders Factory accelerator and the leading commercial satellite data provider, Planet. We won our a contract in our first 2 months of operation - a seagrass restoration project in Spain. We have raised some pre-seed funding, and are looking to raise a seed round in Fall 2024 to build out a full-stack product, build a project pipeline, and expand the team. We have an experience team consisting of an ex-investment banker, a leading remote sensing academic, and a talented scientific engineer. Our advisors include the Head of Product at Array Labs, and the key architect of the Global Mangrove Watch. We work flexibly with a mix of remote working and the team coming together on a monthly basis.

👀 Are you our Head of Product?

Our Head of Product is the most important hire we’re ever going to make, and we’d love to find someone to work with the co-founders, Paige & Dimos as part of the founding team.

Why you’ll be a fundamental addition to the team:

  • We need to prove the business case for marine conservation and build a powerful, user-friendly product to incentivise user activity across diverse user groups (project developers, corporates, financial institutions)
  • You will be the first product hire; you’ll need to own the strategic architecture from day one, get stuck into coding as well as building a world class engineering team.

Key challenges you’ll help solve:

  • You will develop a product roadmap that takes our innovative back-end analytics and helps us build a full-stack for actionable insights, metrics and tools for our customers
  • You will need to think creatively (leveraging customer insight) about how we can incentivise frequent product use to enable recurring monthly revenue
  • You will need to work closely with our scientific engineering team to develop a scalable, automated data pipeline and leverage third-party providers

Expected experience you’ll come with:

  • You are confident with full-stack web development
  • Have experience in API development for partnerships and integrations with third party software; we don't need - or want - to build everything from scratch.
  • You’ll have led a product development team before and be comfortable with identifying & hiring great technical talent.
  • Plus you’ll have worked in one or more early-stage startups and have an appetite for experimenting with new technologies and tools to drive innovation and creativity.
  • Ideally you are familiar with remote sensing technology

🙌 What you'll get:

  • A competitive salary
  • Significant equity stake in the business
  • Autonomy & freedom to build & scale the product how YOU best see fit.
  • Core member of the founding team
  • A unique opportunity to be first to market and build a business that will scale.

As we will be closing our seed round, we'd like someone to be fully dedicated in this role, until then, we'd love to explore a part-time/projecty based type of involvement. We're early in our needs for this type of role, therefore can be very flexible for the right person.
