Technical Specialist, Fisheries Stock and Ecosystem Analyst

Fisheries employ the MSC Fisheries Standard certification worldwide to demonstrate their commitment to providing sustainable seafood. This position is responsible for successfully interpreting and implementing the MSC Fisheries standard for sustainable fisheries, emphasizing Principle 1 - sustainability of the target stock(s) and may include Principle 2 - impact of the fishery on ecosystem components. In addition, this role will manage a client portfolio, conduct MSC assessments as part of an audit team, and provide administrative and technical support to audit teams, clients, international affiliates, and colleagues.</p><p>The position also includes periodic field auditing, with international travel up to 20% yearly. More information on the MSC Fisheries Standard can be found at www.MSC.org.</p><p><strong>Relevant Standards/Schemes</strong></p><ul> <li>MSC Fisheries (Principle 1 &amp; 2)</li> <li>Others as approved by MSC Fisheries Program Manager</li></ul><p><strong>Essential Duties and Responsibilities</strong></p><p>Project Management</p><ul> <li>Responsible for managing a portfolio of fishery assessments</li> <li>Coordinate internal resources and external auditors for project execution</li> <li>Monitor and track individual project progress to ensure deliverables meet established timelines</li> <li>Point of contact for clients, providing advice and assistance in response to operational and technical questions</li> <li>Produce and review reports, ensuring these meet MSC standard requirements</li></ul><p>Auditing &amp; Technical Oversight</p><ul> <li>Review and interpret scientific information related to the impact of fisheries to score and assess their performance in line with the requirements of the MSC Fisheries Standard</li> <li>Conduct technical reviews, providing support and training to new auditors on technical aspects of the MSC standard</li> <li>Responsible for leading and facilitating stakeholder consultation with scientists, conservation groups, fisheries management groups, and industry</li> <li>Establish and maintain communication with MSC staff to ensure accurate and consistent standard interpretation</li> <li>Complete training for MSC assessment team leader, responsible for guiding the assessment team and overseeing the assessment process</li></ul><p><strong>Minimum Qualifications</strong></p><ul> <li>Master’s degree in Fisheries, Marine Conservation Biology, Natural Resources, Environmental Management, or other relevant field (e.g. Economics, Mathematics, Statistics)</li> <li>3+ years of experience applying different stock assessment techniques and models</li> <li>3+ years of professional experience in biology and population dynamics of pelagic fish</li> <li>3+ years of experience in research into, policy analysis for, or management of the impact of fisheries on aquatic ecosystems, including at least two topics: bycatch, Endangered, Threatened, or Protected (ETP) species, habitats, or ecosystem interactions</li> <li>Oral and written fluency in English and work experience that includes professional written communication</li> <li>Ability to travel internationally up to 20% as needed</li> <li>Strong organization, multi-tasking, and prioritization skills</li> <li>Proficient with business software, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and database management</li> <li>Strong attention to detail, excellent customer service capacity, and ability to function effectively as a member and leader of a team</li> <li>Initiative, good judgment, and ability to work independently under pressure in a changing environment</li></ul><p><strong>Preferred Qualifications</strong></p><ul> <li>PhD in Fisheries, Marine Conservation Biology, Natural Resources, Environmental Management, or other relevant field (e.g. Economics, Mathematics, Statistics)</li> <li>3+ years of experience or primary authorship of at least two peer-reviewed stock assessments applying catch-at-age stock assessment methods</li> <li>Experience leading teams and projects, mainly involving collaborative report deliverables and stakeholder engagement</li></ul><p>The above description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed.
