Title : Civil Structural Engineer

This role is for a Civil or Structural Engineer. Candidates who are interested in performing responsibilities associated with both the roles or learning more about the other role they don't have experience with are encouraged to apply.

Basic Function

As a part of the Civil & Structural Engineering Team within the Engineering and Innovation team at SB Energy, the Civil or Structural Engineer will act as an owner’s engineer subject matter utility-scale solar power and energy storage projects as well as a reviewer and designer of development projects. Other tasks include projects with the Innovation team and supporting Operations & Maintenance activities.

COMMON TO CIVIL AND STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING ROLES

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze topographic surveys, hydrology, environmental and geotechnical reports to ensure compliance with internal, local, state, and federal engineering standards and identify issues affecting proposed design.
  • Conduct site feasibility studies, assess land suitability, and identify potential issues impacting construction.
  • Perform project design reviews at specific milestones throughout the final design process and coordinating with other internal reviews and approvals by key stakeholders, as needed.
  • Provide input to Civil and Structural Engineering design standards to set requirements for quality, presentation standards, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Attend site construction meetings and conduct site observations.
  • Support O&M team with technical knowledge and troubleshooting.
  • Serve as an engineering resource for internal organization, providing as needed support to the greater organization.
  • Prepare exhibits and quantity estimates.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Minimum four (4) years’ experience in Civil or Structural Engineering. 2 years of Utility-scale solar power plants a plus.
  • BSCE from ABET-accredited University, MS a plus, PE license a plus.
  • Demonstrated strong engineering, design, and communication skills, and an ability to work in a dynamic team environment to think outside the box and solve traditional problems in new ways.
  • Experience with geotechnical and hydrological studies.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and MS Office.
  • Proficiency in coding a plus.
  • Organizational skills. Experience as a development or project engineer is a plus.

CIVIL ENGINEER

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform analysis and conceptual design for drainage features, hydrology, access road alignments, grading, and other civil design elements.
  • Conduct value engineering of project designs by drawing upon knowledge of grading, road design, and plant drainage design including best practices, specifications, cost, efficiency, code compliance, performance, and reliability.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Demonstrated strong engineering, design, and communication skills, and an ability to work in a dynamic team environment to think outside the box and solve traditional problems in new ways.
  • In-depth knowledge in grading and drainage design, including earthwork calculations and general cost estimating.
  • Familiarity with civil engineering principles such as:
    • Land surveying and staking fundamentals (including ALTA Map production), hydrology studies and reading flood plain maps.
    • Geotechnical reports and understanding soil characteristics.
    • Erosion and sediment control design, best management practices, and SWPPP development and management.
    • Stormwater management design including impervious are calculations and sizing of infrastructure.
  • Experience working with EPCs on design and technical problem solving, with exposure of how civil and geotechnical aspects of a project impact PV design.
  • Proficiency with GIS data management and analytics, preferably ESRI ArcGIS.

 STRUCTURAL ENGINEER

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform review of steel and concrete drawings and studies for large scale PV Solar and BESS power plants including the solar array trackers and foundations.
  • Conduct value engineering of project designs by drawing upon knowledge of civil, geotechnical, and structural design including best practices, specifications, cost, efficiency, code compliance, performance, and reliability.
  • Perform substation structural design drawings and studies.
  • Perform new technology review of products to be used on projects.

 Qualifications/Requirements

  • Proficiency in Steel and Concrete design.
  • Proficiency in a Finite Element Analysis program such as RISA, STAAD, or SAP2000.
  • Experience with substation design a plus.
  • Experience with mechanical analysis and modeling programs such as Solidworks is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Lpile or a similar soil/structure analysis program.

 

Travel Requirements

The position requires up to 25% domestic and international travel.

Location: Denver, San Francisco Bay Area, or remote option available

Base Pay - $110,000 - $125,000

Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, such as skill set, experience, certifications, specific work location, and other non-discriminatory factors permitted by law. Base pay may vary per location due to differences in the cost of living.

The total compensation package for this position may also include an annual discretionary bonus, full Health & Wellness Benefits package, and other applicable incentive perks as outlined in any formal offer made. The final compensation package will be discussed with the candidate during the final stages of the hiring process.
