Role Overview: As a Software Engineer at Hyphen, you will be instrumental in the architecture and development of backend services crucial for processing and analyzing environmental data. In this dynamic role, you will focus on developing robust data pipelines, managing databases, and researching and operationalizing AI models to address complex environmental challenges. The ideal candidate will be deeply committed to advancing sustainability through technology, combining expertise in backend development with a strong foundation in machine learning and deep learning to drive innovative climate change solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Architect and develop backend services and data pipelines for environmental data processing.
  • Implement, test, and deploy machine learning and deep learning models to enhance environmental data applications. 
  • Implement reliable MLOps practices including CI/CD workflows as well as monitoring. Governance, trust and explainability will be critical to our success. 
  • Ensure robust and reliable management of databases, focusing on logical design and system integrity.
  • Design and develop APIs to facilitate efficient communication between different software layers.
  • Collaborate with research scientists, engineers, and product managers to develop AI models and translate technical specifications into end-user services.
  • Participate in all phases of the software development lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing, and deployment.
  • Enhance software scalability, security, and privacy.
  • Analyze and improve system resource stability and efficiency.
  • Stay updated with the latest technologies in backend development and artificial intelligence.
  • Document system architecture and development processes.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field preferred.
  • Professional experience in a similar role. 
  • Proficiency in Python and backend programming.
  • In-depth knowledge of ML and DL frameworks such as PyTorch and Scikit-Learn.
  • Experience with FastAPI or similar API development frameworks.
  • Experienced with relational databases such as PostgreSQL and capable of optimizing database design and queries for performance and scalability.
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (Google Cloud preferred, or AWS, Azure) and containerization technologies like Docker.
  • A proactive and independent work style, capable of taking initiative in a remote setting.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • A background or strong interest in geospatial technology, atmospheric sciences or geosciences.
