Company Overview:

SkyCool Systems is a mission-driven, seed to series A stage, clean energy startup revolutionizing the cooling industry with Cooler-than-Air materials. Our flagship product, a cooling panel system, reduces energy and/or water consumption in refrigeration systems up to 30%. It also provides modular heat rejection capacity that delays large capex expenditures and unburdens aging condenser systems in a world that's breaking high temperature records every summer. These systems can be used in various sectors, including grocery stores, cold storage facilities, and data centers. Backed by DOE and private sector funding, as well as numerous industry partners, we are poised for rapid growth and are seeking a dynamic Head of Business Development to lead our sales efforts.

Position Outcomes:

Within the first 6 months, the Head of Business Development will:

  • Secure pilot projects: Land 1-2 pilots with major grocery chains, 1-2 pilots with cold storage providers, and 1-2 pilots with data center operators with the aid of DOE ScaleUp funding
  • Drive revenue growth: Through these pilots establish customer commitments for future sales at target price points that align with internal cost down and customer IRR metrics.
  • Further define value propositions: Through active listening and client engagement, further refine or identify new value propositions for the SkyCool panel product
  • Establish scalable processes: Develop and implement repeatable business development playbooks and sales processes including the expansion of our CRM and establishing of a repeatable proposal process.
  • Enhance brand visibility: Elevate SkyCool's market presence through thought leadership, industry events, and strategic partnerships on a startup budget.

Within 18 months, the Head of Business Development will:

  • Expand customer base: Secure contracts with a minimum of 5 new customers across multiple sectors.
  • Build a high-performing team: Recruit, train, and manage a team of 2-4 sales professionals capable of meeting or exceeding sales targets.
  • Drive significant revenue growth: Establish recurring project pipelines with existing customers and grow net new business for a combined growth rate of 100% per year.
  • Develop a robust sales pipeline: Maintain a pipeline of qualified leads valued at $10 to $50mil or more.
  • Foster strategic alliances: Establish partnerships with key industry players to accelerate market adoption. These can be channel sales, co-marketing, or OEM partnerships that define new business models for the company

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Proven Track Record:
    • Years of experience is irrelevant. Delivered, provable results in sales or business development, with a history of exceeding revenue targets and closing complex deals in the refrigeration, HVAC, or energy efficiency sectors, is all that matters.
    • An existing network of selling to or buying from major grocery chains, cold storage providers, or data center operators is highly desirable.
    • Experience in a startup environment is a plus.
  • Technical Acumen:
    • Working knowledge of refrigeration systems and related technologies.
    • Ability to articulate the technical and financial benefits of SkyCool's solutions to diverse audiences.
    • The ability to be self-sufficient with putting together basic excel models, proposals and contacts is important. 
  • Leadership & Communication:
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport, and actively listen at all levels of an organization, and maintain a positive attitude in the face of legitimate challenges.
    • Ability to deeply penetrate accounts, identify champions and key decision makers, and make multiple touch points in an organization.
    • Strong leadership qualities, including the ability to inspire, motivate, and coach the team, while respecting diverse skill sets and backgrounds
  • Adaptability & Resourcefulness:
    • Ability to act as a partner to the executive team by operating with autonomy and high levels of communication and accountability
    • Comfortable working both remotely and in-person as needed.
    • Proven problem-solving skills and the ability to think on your feet in a startup environment where requirements can change.
