Main Function & Scope

The Mechanical Reliability Engineer is part of the Asset Maintenance Department. We are a leading European and UK Independent Power Producer (“IPP”) in the renewable energy sector. Reporting to the Mechanical Reliability Manager, this role is determinant in enhancing the reliability of mechanical components within wind turbines. This role will be instrumental in minimising downtime, optimising maintenance strategies, and promoting continuous improvements to enhance performance. As a member of the Mechanical Engineers team, you will manage risk and resolve complex technical issues, providing expert support to both the Asset Maintenance and Asset Management teams.

Mechanical Systems Reliability Engineering Support

  • Assess the condition of mechanical systems and provide expert guidance on these components to internal and external clients.
  • Oversee drive train components within partial scope maintenance contracts and define actions to maintain or return assets to service.
  • Offer support during end-of-contract inspections, including classifying defects and providing a risk-informed perspective on potential failure timelines.
  • Collaborate directly with the Predictive Maintenance team to ensure all condition monitoring system (CMS) alerts are investigated and escalated to prevent unscheduled major component failures.

Root Cause and Failure Mode Analysis

  • Lead the root cause and failure mode analysis process to determine failures' causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Conduct fleetwide condition and reliability assessments at the component level, devising strategies to increase reliability and reduce the risk of component failures.

Creation and Implementation of Engineering Controls and Best Practices

  • Participate in technical due diligence, assess solutions for serial defects, and create necessary Engineering Change Requests (ECRs).
  • Develop and implement best practices, processes, and tools to assess mechanical systems' conditions, optimise maintenance strategies, and enhance overall operational reliability.

Supply and Refurbishment of Drive Train Major Components

  • Develop and implement spare parts stock strategies based on wind farm condition assessments and risk evaluations.
  • Work with the Stock Management and maintenance teams to set repair policies and support the establishment of framework contracts with refurbishment companies.
  • Assist the Mechanical Reliability team in developing new overhaul routes for major components.

Budget Management

  • Manage the budget for department activities, ensuring cost-effective maintenance strategies that meet reliability objectives.

    Skills and Knowledge

    desirable

    • Knowledge of condition monitoring for rotating equipment, including vibration and lubrication analysis.
    • Demonstrable experience in the wind power sector and familiarity with mechanical subsystems of wind turbines.
    • In-depth understanding of wind turbine drive trains, including design, manufacture, and operational failure modes.
    • Proficient in Root Cause Analysis methodologies and strong project management skills.
    • Knowledge of contract structures and negotiation.

    Language Skills:

    • Fluent in English; additional French, Spanish, or Portuguese languages would be advantageous.

    Relevant Experience:

    • Wind energy industry, specifically in maintaining mechanical systems within wind turbines.
    • Track record in multi-project and stakeholder management.
    • Experience with safety protocols across the business.
