Main Function & Scope:

The Grid and Protection Engineer will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining electrical protection systems and grid infrastructure to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient delivery of electrical power.


This role involves performing detailed system analysis, developing protection schemes, overseeing installations, and conducting maintenance and troubleshooting activities. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize grid performance and comply with industry standards and regulations.

 

Location

This role is based in Portugal.

 

Key Responsibilities:


  1. Design and Development:
  • Develop protection schemes for electrical systems, including overcurrent, differential, distance, and bus protection.
  • Design upgrades and expansions for grid infrastructure to enhance reliability and efficiency.

 

  1. System Analysis and Fault Investigation:
  • Conduct power system studies such as load flow, short circuit, and stability analysis.
  • Perform fault analysis to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.
  • Analyze system performance data to improve grid reliability and performance.

 

  1. Installation, Commissioning, and Maintenance:
  • Oversee the installation and commissioning of protection and control systems.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and testing of protection systems and high-voltage equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to protection systems and grid operations.


  1. Compliance and Documentation:
  • Ensure all protection systems meet regulatory and industry standards.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of protection schemes, grid configurations, and maintenance activities.
  • Prepare detailed reports and technical documentation for stakeholders.

 

  1. Collaboration and Support:
  • Work closely with planning, operations, and maintenance teams to optimize grid performance.
  • Provide technical support and training to engineering and operations staff.
  • Collaborate with external partners, including utility companies, regulatory bodies, and equipment suppliers.

 

  1. Continuous Improvement:
  • Stay updated with advancements in protection technology and grid management practices.
  • Propose and implement improvements to enhance the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the power system.
  • Participate in professional development activities to maintain and improve technical skills.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Desirable experience in wind and solar electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards and industry best practices in electrical protection and grid management.
  • Ability to interpret and apply technical standards and specifications.

 

Relevant Experience

Essential

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in power system protection and control.
  • Proven experience in designing and implementing protection schemes and grid infrastructure.
  • Experience in fault analysis and troubleshooting high-voltage electrical systems.

 

Education & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is highly desirable.
  • Relevant certifications in power systems and protection engineering.

 

Travel Requirements:

  • This position may require occasional travel to several sites for inspections, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to travel domestically and potentially internationally as needed.
