Technician (Electrical)– Test & Development

Location: Farnborough

The Role:

  • We’ve an exciting opportunity for a highly technically minded, proactive, and competent automotive electrician to work in Test and Development at our brand-new, purpose-built facility in Farnborough, working on the next generation of Zero emissions.
  • You will be working on the latest technologies from EV through Hydrogen, Hybrids to Diesel systems, and even autonomous vehicles, that operate in the UK and around the world.
  • Although based at Farnborough, you will also conduct test work at various test facilities in the UK and potentially around the world.

Your dream role:

  • Great chance to expand your knowledge across the new vehicle technologies.
  • Working in the new T&D workshop on new product development you will be:
    • Prototype build and commissioning.
    • Investigating and resolving faults using CAN analyser.
    • Resolving wiring issue through to creating bespoke harnesses.
    • Using supplier’s diagnostics to interrogate their systems.
    • Working as an individual or as part of a team part of the team
    • Carryout necessary mechanical tasks to achieve the required work task.
  • A high percentage of the work is fault identification and resolution, this covers the headline tasks of:
    • Analysing CAN systems with Can based diagnostics (Vector, etc.)
    • Work with suppliers to trace faults in the inter-connected systems.
    • Harness and plug/pin fault identification
    • Bespoke harness creation working from suppliers’ information.
  • Working closely with a T&D Engineer you will:
    • Prepare vehicle for testing.
    • Install instrumentation and data logging systems.
    • Conduct tests in and around Farnborough or at a suitable test facility
    • Collect results and give feedback as requested by the T&D Engineer.
  • We are looking for people who:
    • Are proactive, showing initiate and ownership (Find, fix, and report a problem).
    • Seek solutions to technical issues by working with T&D and Engineering staff.
    • Can work closely with suppliers through installation and testing.
  • Can work closely with the T&D teams across the ADL sites in supporting the whole business.

What you will bring:

  • Educated in automotive electrical engineering or relevant discipline (or equivalent work experience).
  • Ideally your work experience will be gained in the automotive industry and in particular; bus, coach, HGV, specialist vehicles or tier-1 suppliers.
  • You should be able to demonstrate a solid understanding and ideally experience of bus and or commercial vehicle systems; in particular: Drive line systems (Electrical & Mech), electrical system, and air systems.
  • A basic knowledge on CAN based systems for both vehicle and data acquisition and be keen to learn more.
  • Your core vehicle test and development experience should ideally include:

o   Vehicle test environment

o   Experience with instrumentation types and application.

o   Ability to learn and use laptop-based data logger software and diagnostic tools.

o   Vehicle/drive line construction, commissioning, and use.

o   Highly technical and a hands-on approach, including workshop skills.

o   A PCV driving license would be desirable.

 

  • Alongside your core technical skills, you will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to support colleagues on multiple simultaneous projects. Furthermore, you will be flexible and willing to adapt to changing requirements.
  • You will be comfortable working unsupervised, under your own initiative and often under pressure to meet deadlines. As such you will have the ability to problem solve and resolve issues in a speedy and thorough manner.
  • You will be IT literate, being comfortable with Microsoft packages, as well as data analysis software.
  • Things can be hectic here. You will have the ability to plan and deliver concurrent tasks and projects against changing targets.
