Role Purpose
Energy transition is changing the fundamental landscape of global raw material supply chains. Cobalt’s key role in lithium-ion battery cathodes brings into focus existing ESG challenges for the metal against a backdrop of increasing government regulation and global political strategy. Alongside strong demand in batteries, cobalt also finds use in alloys for critical aerospace and military applications.
The Senior Research Analyst – Cobalt Markets will provide unmatched cobalt expertise to clients, ensuring detailed and timely analysis of the key opportunities and risks to the cobalt supply chain. The role covers analysis of a broad range of topics from supply, demand and price fundamentals to the geopolitical landscape, ESG, decarbonisation and cobalt recycling. An appreciation for long-term technology trends is the focus for understanding the future of this fast-changing, dynamic industry.
The Senior Research Analyst – Cobalt Markets is a role within the Energy Transition & Battery Raw Materials team as part of Metals and Mining Markets.
The Senior Research Analyst – Cobalt Markets will apply solid analytical capabilities and knowledge of the cobalt market to enhance Wood Mackenzie's analysis and services to customers.
Through regular product deliveries and client interactions, the Senior Research Analyst will develop a sophisticated understanding of the implications for our clients’ interests. They will provide frequent, thorough and clear written analyses to defined publication schedules, and perceptive Insights providing innovative and original views on industry developments. The analyst will communicate regularly with clients, sharing our views and engaging in mutually beneficial dialogue.
Main Responsibilities
The role is focused on supporting the expansion of our cobalt product suite, while building and supporting our extensive client base.
Provide insightful market analysis on cobalt demand and supply for our short and long-term reports
Produce original market analysis with a culmination in client deliverables and industry thought leadership pieces
Monitor developments in the cobalt sector providing analysis on industry developments
Help to shape our cobalt analysis and work with our consultancy business on periodic projects
Contribute towards the enhancement of our regular products in collaboration with the rest of the Cobalt team and the wider Metals and Mining organisation
Work closely with colleagues in other Research sector groups to help shape the company’s integrated view
Provide our client base with concise, timely and insightful analysis of key industry trends and events
Establish and maintain contacts with mining industry stakeholders to acquire proprietary data and knowledge
Develop and maintain productive relationships with industry contacts and research clients, including presentations to clients via various deliverables, necessitating international travel
Effectively communicate analysis findings to clients through written deliverables, web calls, podcasts, conferences and face-to-face presentations.
Participate in supporting sales and marketing activities including face-to-face events and webinars
Contribute consistently to consultancy or other cross-sector projects and help shape project requirements
Respond to client enquiries and ad hoc requests in a timely and professional manner
Make a contribution towards internal and external knowledge sharing
Deliverables
Degree-qualified in a relevant discipline (e.g. Mining/ Geology/ Metallurgical Engineering or Economics/ Business etc.)
Detailed knowledge of cobalt or similar markets, including supply, demand and pricing
Proven numerical analytic capabilities, including problem-solving and technical skills
Presentation experience
Strong organisation and planning skills plus the ability to manage own workload
The ability to work as part of a team which may involve multiple locations and time zones
A willingness to travel to other company and client offices, and undertake industry site visits
A strong commitment to commercial excellence and meeting the high-quality standards expected by our clients
Expectations
We are a hybrid working company and the successful applicant will be expected to be physically present in the office at least 2 days per week to foster and contribute to a collaborative environment, but this may be subject to change in the future.
The nature of this role precludes it from consideration for part-time or flexible working arrangements.
Due to the global nature of the team, a degree of flexible working will be required to accommodate different time zones.
Able to work in a global and virtual environment as the team is based in multiple locations.
