About this Job

The Senior Hardware Technician will be responsible for operating and maintaining standard workshop equipment, assisting engineers with hardware development projects, fabricating parts using workshop/fabrication equipment, and managing the workshop and inventory. The ideal candidate is a team-player who has hands-on experience with various hardware tools and machinery, strong problem-solving and communication skills, as well as the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.



Responsibilities

  • Fabrication & Prototyping:
  • Assist in hardware development by manufacturing parts using workshop tools.
  • Interpret and create technical drawings and CAD files for accurate component production.
  • Collaborate on prototyping, providing feedback to enhance manufacturability and reliability.

  • Workshop Operations:
  • Set up, operate, and maintain hardware workshop equipment, including CNC machines, 3D printers, and laser cutters.
  • Ensure equipment is safe and functional, performing routine maintenance and repairs as needed.
  • Enforce safety protocols, acting as the EH&S champion by training and ensuring proper tool use.
  • Continuously improve shop operations and organization through creative problem-solving.

  • Project Support:
  • Participate in design reviews, ensuring designs are practical and manufacturable.
  • Develop test fixtures, jigs, and run test rigs to generate system performance data.

  • Inventory Management:
  • Manage workshop inventory, monitor stock levels, and reorder supplies using online systems.

  • Training & Mentorship:
  • Train and guide junior technicians on equipment use, fostering a collaborative workshop environment.

  • Continuous Improvement:
  • Identify and implement process improvements for greater efficiency and safety.
  • Stay current with hardware fabrication technologies, recommending new tools and techniques.

About you

  • Education & Experience:
  • High school diploma required; Associate or Bachelor's in a related field preferred.
  • 7+ years of experience in hardware workshops, with strong skills in CNC machining, 3D printing, laser cutting, and hand tools.
  • Experience with technical drawings, both interpreting and creating for suppliers.

  • Technical Skills:
  • Proficient in reading and creating technical drawings and CAD files.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with fabrication processes, materials, and inventory management software.
  • Basic electronics knowledge is a plus.

  • Soft Skills:
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and time management skills.
  • Team-oriented, mission-driven, and adaptable in a dynamic startup environment.
  • Ability to thrive under diverse challenges and foster a collaborative team culture.

  • Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work comfortably in a workshop environment.
  • Full-time, in-office position in Emeryville.

  • Certifications:
  • Relevant certifications in CNC machining, manufacturing techniques, or safety are a plus.
