Job summary: Part Time TIC/TEK Coordinator (Sept through June) working with educators and FRTU chapter members to provide outdoor educational experiences for students in the Upper Feather and Yuba River region.

About Feather River Trout Unlimited: Feather River Trout Unlimited is a cold-water conservation group. We are dedicated to conserving, protecting, and restoring the fisheries and watersheds in the Upper Yuba and Upper Feather River Region. The chapter has provided Trout in the Classroom programming in Plumas, Sierra, and Lassen Counties for more than 15 years. We have added a Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) component to this program as we believe the Native American culture will provide students with additional knowledge of the region and its tribal partners.

Program Description: Trout in the Classroom (TIC/TEK) is an outdoor environmental education program that engages students primarily in the 4th grade, to connect with the natural environment. We provide educators and students an opportunity to better know and experience the watershed and their immediate surroundings through programing that utilizes the Learning Landscapes sites that are connected to many of the schools in the region. Traditional Ecological Knowledge is brought to classrooms though site visits with local experts that discuss the indigenous perspective on natural and cultural resources.  In the spring the chapter provides trained educators all the supplies necessary to raise trout from eggs in their classrooms. The TIC /TEK program tries to work with regional partners to facilitate opportunity to get outside and enjoy the natural place we call home.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Coordinator:

  • Work closely with educators at each school site in Plumas, Sierra, and Lassen County, and chapter members. This includes engaging with educators and chapter members on a frequent basis during the fall and spring of each school year.

  • Works closely with FRTU Volunteer members to arrange, schedule, and coordinate interactive indoor and outdoor activities and field days.
  • Arrange for any educators to be trained and permitted via California Department of Fish and Wildlife workshops so that they understand the TIC/CAEP aquarium program.
  • Maintain and encourage the relationship between the chapter and the local Native Americans, to provide cultural programing in classrooms.
  • Research and conduct outreach to grow and maintain a network of school participants in the region.
