What you need to Qualify:

 

  1. Experience: Five years of professional mechanical engineering experience, at least two years of which shall have been in design and inspection work in several of the fields discussed in "TYPICAL TASKS" below
  2. Education: Equivalent to graduation from college with major work in mechanical engineering. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)

 

Typical Tasks

Plans, organizes, assigns and checks work, gives instructions and assistance, evaluates performance, and makes technical decisions in connection with the supervision of the work of a group of designers and drafting technicians engaged in making complete designs, construction drawings, and specifications of major mechanical installations, such as heating and air-conditioning, ventilation, refrigeration, plumbing, sewage collection systems, water supply and water purification systems, drainage systems, and steam generating plants; writes technical specifications; checks drawings and makes cost estimates of mechanical systems; makes detailed inspections of construction operations in the field; makes independent surveys covering installation, repair, and recommended improvements to mechanical systems; coordinates the work of engineers and contractors; dictates correspondence and prepares reports.

 

 

This important position will provide technical leadership in the planning, development, and implementation of California’s building energy codes overall, and specifically in the field of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC). If you have expertise in the mechanical design of HVAC and water-heating systems for commercial buildings and are knowledgeable with the California Energy Code, we would love to hear from you!

 

 Desirable Qualifications:

• Extensive experience in mechanical design of HVAC and water-heating systems in commercial buildings, and expert ability to analyze the benefits and considerations of emerging technologies to be considered for the California Energy Code.

• Deep experience with whole building simulation program(s) and California’s building energy compliance software (CBECC, CBECC-Res).

• Knowledge of technical and policy matters pertaining to energy efficiency, building decarbonization, and/or load flexibility topics including state, national, and local policies; emerging technologies and measures; and/or strategies to realize energy efficiency savings and reduce emissions associated with new and existing buildings.

• Strong research and analytical skills and ability to proactively solve problems, identify and assess alternatives to make informed recommendations on complex topics for planning and decision-making.

• Ability to provide technical leadership and quality review of work completed by a diverse team, and to perform independent tasks that contribute toward shared goals.

• Ability to draft, review, analyze and summarize complex technical information and data for various audiences, including Commission leadership and the public.

• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, and oral communication skills.

• Ability to ensure compliance with administrative policies and procedures.
