About unspun

unspun's mission is to reduce global carbon emissions by 1% by revolutionizing the way we make clothes. We envision a world where every garment is made on-demand, eliminating overproduction and reconnecting people with the clothing they wear.

We've recently secured Series B funding and are poised for rapid scaling. Our innovative Vega™ technology, a revolutionary 3D weaving system for direct yarn-to-garment production, is at the heart of our mission to transform the fashion industry.

About You

You're an experienced software engineer with a passion for technical leadership and team management. You thrive in hands-on roles where you can balance coding, mentoring, and driving both technical and team decisions. You're excited about the challenge of integrating cutting-edge software with innovative hardware solutions, and you're motivated by the potential to make a significant environmental impact through technology.

What You'll Do

As our Tech Lead, your core responsibility will be to drive technical excellence in our software development efforts while actively contributing to our codebase and leading the software engineering team. You will work across multiple teams, with emphasis on software, hardware, and product, to realize the world's first 3D woven products on the market. Your key responsibilities include:

  • Conduct regular team meetings, retrospectives, and team-building activities to enhance cohesion and productivity
  • Meet 1:1 with team members to provide mentorship, develop career paths, and create individual growth plans
  • Actively write code and collaborate with team members, improving overall code quality
  • Lead the technical development and deployment of Vega OS, enabling the achievement of production targets
  • Design and implement scalable software architectures that effectively integrate with our hardware systems
  • Drive the development of our fit, virtual try-on, and custom garment production software
  • Collaborate closely with hardware and product teams to deliver integrated solutions
  • Contribute to hiring and growing the software engineering team

Ideal Qualities

  • 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience
  • 3+ years of experience in a technical leadership role, demonstrating both individual contribution and team management
  • Expert-level proficiency in our tech stack (TypeScript, React, Node.js) with hands-on coding abilities
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and best practices
  • Experience with hardware-software integration and real-time systems
  • Track record of successfully delivering complex software projects
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to mentor and motivate a team

Bonus Points

  • Experience in fashion tech, e-commerce, or manufacturing software
  • Background in scaling engineering teams in high-growth startups
  • Familiarity with 3D technologies, computer vision, or machine learning
  • Experience with iOS development

We don't expect you to have all of the listed qualities. If you don't meet all the requirements but have a voracious passion for learning and using technology to drive positive change, we strongly encourage you to apply.

Our Philosophy

We won’t roll our eyes if your socks don’t match. We get it. But then, if you spend those extra few minutes in the morning matching your socks and shirt, we get that too. Our workspaces are sometimes spotless and sometimes chaotic, and we celebrate messy exploration. We work through complex problems but generate simple and elegant solutions. We strive to look at things differently, and never do anything solely because “that’s the way it’s always been done.”

We’re a team of designers and engineers, industry-veterans and serial entrepreneurs, artists and developers. We’re aspiring chess masters and climbers, bakers and photographers. Originally spun out of Stanford and the University of Colorado, we now call the SF Bay Area home, with strong ties to Hong Kong. We are looking for teammates who share our desire to work on ambitious problems and leave the world better than we found it.

unspun is an equal opportunity employer, and we are committed to being a diverse team that reflects a broad range of background, thought, and experience. We do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, status as an individual with a disability, status as protected veteran, or any other legally protected characteristics. Women, minorities, and people from underrepresented backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
