The Climatebase Fellowship: We launched the first cohort of the Climatebase Fellowship in 2022. Since then, we have helped accelerate the climate careers of over 2,400 Fellows that we've selected from over 11,000 applicants across 6 cohorts. We are currently mid-way through cohort 6.
About the role:
Climatebase is seeking a talented and experienced Backend Engineer to join our remote-first team. As a key member of our engineering team, you will play a crucial role in developing new features (and maintaining existing ones), to ensure a seamless and engaging experience for our users.
This position can be located anywhere in South America or Europe.
Responsibilities:
Architect and implement robust, scalable backend processes with a focus on performance, maintainability, and reusability
Since we are a small team, you will act as your own de-facto tech lead and QA. You will be responsible for scoping out your projects, tracking and communicating progress throughout, and testing it end-to-end (both with unit tests and live testing).
Optimize application performance and improve legacy code
Participate in code reviews and contribute to technical discussions
Stay up-to-date with the latest backend technologies and best practices
Requirements:
4+ years of professional experience in backend development
Experience working with a web server framework (Ruby on Rails, Django, Spring, etc)
Experience with database design
Experience scoping out technical projects end-to-end.
Taking (often abstract) product requirements and translating them into well-defined technical specs
Breaking large tasks up into manageable, easily trackable subtasks
Strong proficiency in Ruby preferred, but not essential
Experience building end-to-end unit tests, and performing general QA
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Familiarity with version control systems (e.g. Git)
Familiarity with AWS (Codebuild, Elastic Container Service, RDS, EC2, etc), as well as general DevOps chops
Strong communication skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, remote team environment
Must be able to overlap with EST timezone (New York) for at least 4-5 hours per day
Bonus Skills:
Experience with Python
Experience with Node.js
Interest in or experience with climate tech and sustainability
Experience working with AI models (both open source models and private APIs, such as OpenAI / Anthropic / etc)
