Note: the hiring manager may elect to fill this position as an Engineer I or one level higher as an Engineer II dependent upon the selected candidate's experience.

The Engineer I position is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer I position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. An Engineer I is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I should have knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.

The Engineer II position is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer II position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. An Engineer II is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer II effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied.

The SCADA engineer works with multiple groups within the Duke Energy organization, including System Operations, to perform both the design and implementation of programs to be executed on Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) devices. These devices convey the metering, alarming, and controls of a given substation and assists field technicians and System Operators in identifying where faults are located as well as troubleshooting and mitigation of issues on the Bulk Power System.

Job Responsibilities

Support multiple SCADA hardware platforms

Interface with P&C Engineering, Design, Field Resources, and Operation/Control Center

Read Protection Onelines, wiring diagrams, and schematics.

Create IO Summaries based on relay settings, drawings, and customer data; collaborate with P&C teammates and Operation/Control Center as needed for unique applications.

Develop SCADA configuration files for Transmission, Distribution and Customer Interconnect Stations

Develop SCADA configuration files on multiple hardware platforms

Adhere to internal and industry compliance and regulations

Provide commissioning and engineering support to field resources when required

Database entry of compliance and non-compliance data & perform Queries

Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.

Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.

Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches associated with the resolution of routine technical problems.

Conducts basic engineering studies requiring little evaluation or ingenuity.

Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures.

Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.  Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.  Maintains accurate records and files.

Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Basic Required Qualifications – Engineer I

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. degree

Basic Required Qualifications – Engineer II

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. degree

  • A minimum of 2 years relevant experience

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of communication protocols:  DNP 3.0, SEL, ASCII, MODBUS

  • Basic understanding of networking

  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.

  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid Mobility Classification. Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
