In support of achieving excellence and business results through safe, reliable operations, our   Reactor Safety department is currently hiring for an Engineer/Engineering Trainee.

This is a permanent, full-time position which offers a competitive benefits, compensation and pension package and is located on site in Tiverton, Ontario.

What will you be responsible for?

  • Is responsible for the planning, designing, composing, evaluating, advising or reporting on any activity which requires the application of engineering principles in a Bruce Power facility.

  •  Maintains instructions and procedures up to date, prepare reports, review proposals from external organizations.

  • Participates in training programs as required.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Provides technical evaluations, advice and solves problems in a number of major work areas, in support of commissioning, operation and maintenance of the facilities.

  • Utilize industry standard software applications (e.g. Computer Aided Fault Tree Analysis (CAFTA) and Phoenix Architect) to calculate nuclear fuel damage risk probabilities.

  • Analyze plant failure events and data for inclusion in reports submitted to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC).

  • Prepare plant reliability reports that that are submitted to the CNSC and support review and auditing of these reports.

  • Participate in industry Risk and Reliability working group activities including occasional travel off Bruce site.

  • Participate in project teams where input is required to ensure reactor safety informed team decisions are made.

  • Review and analyze actual plant events to evaluate the impact on safety.

  • Review proposed plant design changes and provide stakeholder input to ensure all reactor safety considerations have been incorporated.

  • Support plant trouble-shooting activities

  • Receives assignments from Supervisor as well as identifies potential problems and opportunities in assigned areas and/or systems in the facility.

  • Receives approval and discusses proposed solution, as required with other personnel internal and external to the company.

  • Prepares submissions including cost justification or financial evaluation as appropriate; recommends adoption of the proposal and steps required to incorporate it.

  • Understands current maintenance and operating problems and takes action to implement change as appropriate.

  • Cooperates with other departments and organizations in arranging tests and providing appropriate documentation as required.

  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the field and incorporate as appropriate.

  • Maintains and/or updates operating and other specified department/divisional/section procedures. Receives assignments relating to procedures from Supervisor or identifies potential problems and opportunities. Discusses these with operating personnel or others as required to ensure consistency with operating licences, policies, principles, standard practices, standing instructions, maximum safety of operation, minimal risk of damage or loss, optimum frequency of routines; efficient operation and the like. Submits for review and approval.

  • Prepares reports to provide information and data in answer to requests or for historical purposes. Collects, or arranges for collection, and analyzes data from past events or operations. Prepares reports for distribution to various groups, outlining technical details of procedures, processes, results or conclusions and the roles played by various groups or external organizations. The foregoing may include delivery of presentations. Provides explanations and answers to questions received from recipients of reports.

  • Reviews proposals received from other sources. Discusses proposal with originator as necessary to suggest changes or revisions as appropriate. Recommends disposition of proposal to Supervisor in writing for review and forwarding for approval authority.

  • Participates in training programs to further own development and assists in the development of others. Attends lectures, completes assignments and write examinations.

  • May be required to gather and collate data for use in department/section budget or business planning preparation and to monitor variances to annual budget and submits to Supervisor for reporting purposes.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Requires a knowledge of physics, chemistry, metallurgy, mathematics, electricity, engineering and economics to technically understand the operation of the facility.

  • Requires a knowledge of English in order to prepare clear and concise reports and recommendations both verbally and in writing.

  • Requires experience to solve problems, to provide advice and guidance, to initiate developmental studies, conduct risk assessments and to make recommendations during the design, commissioning and operation of a nuclear facility; to evaluate components or materials, and to perform economic studies and evaluations associated with the design, commissioning and operation of a nuclear facility.

  • Efficiency in understanding interactions between the various process and safety systems in a nuclear generating station is an asset.

  • Knowledge of Risk and Reliability workstation PRA software suite (CAFTA, Phoenix etc.) is an asset.

Education and Experience:

Engineer (Occupation Code 670325)

  • Completion of a 4-year University degree in Engineering.

  • An Ontario Professional Engineering designation (P.Eng.) is required.

  • A period of over 6 years and up to and including 8 years’ experience is considered necessary.

Engineer Trainee (Occupation Code 670207)

  • Completion of a 4-year University degree in Engineering.

  • Required to obtain a valid Professional Engineers of Ontario certification.

  • A period of over 2 years and up to and including 4 years' experience is considered necessary.
