What You Will Do:
 As the Senior R&D Engineer, you will lead Sperra’s New York-based 3D concrete printing R&D facility. You will be responsible for leading facility operations, developing new systems for large-scale additive manufacturing, and spearheading the advancement of 3D printing technologies for renewable energy applications.
 
Primary responsibilities:
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of Sperra’s 3D concrete printing facility in Rochester, NY
  • Lead the development of new methods, systems, and technologies for large-scale 3D concrete printing
  • Manage R&D projects, timelines, and team members to meet research objectives
  • Design and prototype equipment and systems for concrete printing processes
  • Develop testing methods, analyze results, and refine designs to improve manufacturing efficiency and product quality
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to drive innovation
  • Ensure safety protocols and regulatory standards are met in the facility
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and interns
  • Prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations for internal stakeholders and funding agencies
  • Contribute to long-term strategic planning for Sperra’s R&D initiatives
  • Other duties as assigned
 
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:
 
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Materials Science, or related discipline
  • 5+ years of experience in additive manufacturing, R&D, or related engineering fields
  • Proven experience managing projects, facilities, or teams in a technical environment
  • Strong expertise in mechanical design and manufacturing processes, including 3D printing 
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and mechanical analysis tools
  • Experience with materials science and mechanical testing of concrete
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, balancing hands-on technical work with management responsibilities
 
Preferred:
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Materials Science, or related discipline
  • Expertise in large-scale additive manufacturing, automation, or construction technologies
  • Experience with concrete materials, mix design, or related construction technologies
  • Familiarity with finite element analysis tools (e.g., COMSOL, ANSYS)
