Position Overview:
As the first finance hire at Peak Energy, the Head of Finance will be responsible for leading all aspects of the company’s financial management, strategy, and operations. This role is critical in driving Peak Energy’s financial success and ensuring the company has a solid foundation for growth. You will have full ownership of the finance function, including strategic financial planning, forecasting, budgeting, financial reporting, accounting, fundraising, and more. The ideal candidate is both a strategic thinker and a hands-on executor, comfortable operating in a high-growth, dynamic environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Strategy & Leadership
- Develop and lead the company’s overall financial strategy in partnership with executive leadership, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
- Provide strategic recommendations to the executive team and the board of directors based on financial insights and data.
- Foster a culture of financial accountability and strategic thinking across departments, enhancing overall business performance.
- Serve as a key business partner to the leadership team, contributing to long-term planning, budgeting, and decision-making.
Financial Operations & Execution
- Lead and manage all day-to-day financial operations, including accounting, financial reporting, payroll management, cash flow management, and tax compliance.
- Build out robust financial processes and controls to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and scalability as the company grows.
- Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting and close processes, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
- Own all accounting functions, ensuring robust general ledger maintenance, accurate journal entries, and thorough account reconciliations.
- Own the payroll process, ensuring timely and accurate compensation for employees while maintaining compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Ensure timely and accurate payments to vendors while fostering strong vendor relationships to enhance operational efficiency.
- Maintain and reconcile accounts payable records, streamlining processes for improved cash flow management.
Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A)
- Lead the financial planning and analysis function, including budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
- Build financial models to support business decisions and evaluate the financial impact of strategic initiatives, investments, and operational changes.
- Monitor actual performance against budget, conducting detailed variance analysis to support strategic initiatives.
- Analyze financial data to identify risks and opportunities, delivering actionable insights to guide business strategy.
Fundraising & Investor Relations
- Partner with the COO and CEO on fundraising initiatives, including developing pitch decks, financial models, and leading due diligence processes.
- Build and maintain relationships with investors, lenders, and financial institutions.
Capital Allocation & Growth Initiatives
- Evaluate opportunities for capital deployment, cost reduction, and business expansion.
- Provide analysis and recommendations on potential mergers, acquisitions, partnerships, and new market entry.
Team Building & Development
- Build and scale the finance team as Peak Energy grows, ensuring a strong financial foundation to support rapid expansion.
- Mentor and develop future finance team members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and excellence.
Risk Management & Compliance
- Ensure the company has appropriate risk management and internal controls in place, including insurance coverage, financial audits, and regulatory compliance.
- Lead the company’s efforts around financial audits and tax filings.
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, establishing a framework for risk management.
- Stay abreast of changes in accounting standards and regulations to ensure the organization remains compliant and strategically positioned.
Project Financing
- Lead financial modeling and analysis for project financing, assessing the viability and alignment of projects with corporate strategy.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to structure innovative financing solutions for non-standard deals, evaluating risks and returns to support strategic objectives.
- Monitor and report on the financial performance of ongoing projects, ensuring adherence to budgets and timelines while identifying opportunities for optimization.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field; CPA or CMA certification preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in finance and accounting, with at least 4 years in a managerial or strategic leadership role.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards, with experience in shaping financial strategy.
- Proven track record in project finance, non-standard deal structuring, and financial analysis within a strategic context.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
- Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- High degree of accuracy and strong attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and drive results in a fast-paced environment.
