About This Position
The Sr. Specialist, BESS Engineering will focus on design engineering for standalone energy storage systems (ESS) as well as ESS integrated with PV projects within the Intersect Power portfolio. Reporting directly to the Manager of ESS Engineering, they will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams. This role is largely hands on and will not have direct reports initially.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Support ESS technical design, including system sizing and electrical modeling, ensuring alignment with performance and financial goals
- Drive cross-functional ESS design optimization to achieve the lowest LCOE
- Develop and refine tools/software for accurate, efficient performance analysis.
- Maintain and update technical specifications, design criteria, technical exhibits and standards.
- Support technical aspects of PPAs, EPC RFPs, and supply agreements for ESS
- Conduct ESS diligence for IE reviews and project financing, and collaborate on equipment selection with suppliers and EPCs.
- Coordinate with development, procurement, and engineering teams for project success.
- Build strong relationships with ESS integrators and vendors for smooth project execution.
- Support regulatory, permitting, and technical issue resolution to ensure compliance.
Qualifications and Experience
- A minimum of 4 years of experience working on the technical aspects of utility-scale PV and battery energy storage power plants across the following four phases: Development, Design, Contracting with equipment manufacturers and EPC/Integrators, and Construction.
- BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent degree with minimum required experience
Qualitative Experience
- Possesses the ability to quantify risk and opportunities around unknowns in design and technology
- Has a solid understanding of the processes involved in renewable energy project development
- Thrives in a cross functional environment, able to guide discussion and identify dependencies between design, production, cost, land use, and LCOE
Skills & Knowledge
- Support project engineering tasks, ensuring effective time management and prioritization of tasks using solid project management skills.
- Apply a strong technical understanding of utility-scale power conversion, power transformers, skidded inverters, and battery technology.
- Assist in ensuring compliance with relevant codes and standards for lithium-ion battery energy storage systems and inverters (e.g., NEC, IBC, IFC, NFPA, UL, IEC) throughout permitting, design, construction, and operational stages. Familiarity with UL9540A, UL1741, and other standards is preferred.
- Collaborate with Procurement and Operations teams to support Energy Storage System (ESS) projects.
- Interface and coordinate with external technical resources, supporting owners' engineering needs.
- Gain and apply a solid technical understanding of lithium-ion battery technology, including the advantages and trade-offs of different chemistries, system design, optimization strategies, cost drivers, and challenges across the project lifecycle.

Physical and Sensory Requirements
- Mostly sedentary work; using standard office equipment including: a computer, keyboard, and telephone.
- Position requires some travel for company-wide meetups: ~5 weeks total through a calendar year, plus additional travel required for site visits. *Full COVID-19 vaccination required to be eligible for travel.
