As a part of our continued growth, our Burnaby office is seeking a motivated and skilled Mechanical Engineer/Designer to support the design and construction of buildings within the Buildings + Places business line.

Job Summary: 

You will work in a team environment with other engineers, technologists, BIM specialists, and project managers to deliver projects in this sector, as well as in support of those in other business lines (such as Transportation and Water) to our clients both here in BC and across Western Canada.  You will also be a part of multidisciplinary project teams comprising of other engineering disciplines, consultants, and architects.

The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

• Preparing deliverables and products such as presentation materials, calculations, drawings, specifications, selections, and cost estimates related to heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) and plumbing systems for commercial, institutional, and light industrial facilities.

• Performing field investigation for incorporating existing conditions into construction documents.

• Performing construction administration duties, such as shop drawing review, RFI response, construction inspection, and respond to client questions.

• Working within a project team environment and possessing good presentation and client interface skills.

• Coordinating work with other project disciplines.

• Working independently and making technical mechanical decisions based on building code interpretation and company standard practice.

• Demonstrating creativity, foresight and mature judgment in anticipating and solving both routine and unusual project delivery, technical and client challenges, determining technical objectives and requirements, organizing programs and projects, and developing standards and guides for technical activities and applications.

• Staying abreast of industry standards and approaches, and best practices.

• Ensuring project work is undertaken is accordance with corporate health and safety policies and quality management systems. Mentoring junior staff.

• Performing assignments of limited scope and complexity. Uses a variety of standard engineering methods and techniques in solving problems.

• Assisting more senior level engineers in carrying out technical tasks requiring accuracy in calculations, completeness of data and adherence to prescribed analysis, design, or computation methods.

• Applying standard practices and techniques in specific situations. Gathers and correlates basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures.

 

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and registered (or be eligible for immediate registration) as a Professional Engineer in British Columbia.

• Excellent attention to detail.

• 4+ years’ experience (ideally with an engineering firm) designing HVAC and plumbing for commercial, institutional, and light industrial facilities.

• Working experience with NBC, BCBC, BCPC, SMACNA, ASHRAE codes and standards.

• Proficient with MS Office Suite.

• Experience using HAP, AutoCAD, REVIT, Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, Project, and Power Point.

• Physically able to climb ladders and enter utility manholes, tunnels, and other mechanical equipment spaces.

• Valid BC Class V Driver's License.

 

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience delivering industrial, transportation, and water/wastewater infrastructure projects.

• Familiarity with ISO quality management systems.

• Excellent written and verbal communications.

• Experience working within internal multidisciplinary teams

• Experience with Building Energy Modeling and their software platforms (IES, eQuest, Energy Plus, HOT2000, RETScreen, etc.) would be considered an asset

• Experience with sustainability standards (LEED, Net Zero, Passive House, Envision) would be considered an asset

• Fire protection design experience would be considered an asset
