Job Description

OVERVIEW

We are seeking a Computational Chemist to develop computational models using various molecular simulation techniques such as Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics Simulations. The successful candidate will be working in a multidisciplinary team to develop methods to understand the molecular structure of soil organic matter through molecular modeling, computational spectroscopy and other computational modeling techniques. The successful candidate will contribute to the revolutionary solution as part of the world-renowned Soil Carbon program - aimed to bring together farmers and clean technology to turn climate change, economic crisis, and food insecurity into opportunities.

MISSION

To develop and apply advanced machine learning models related to predicting the outcome of computational chemistry simulations, which plays a key role in measuring soil carbon sequestration.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

Reporting to the Director, Bioinformatics & Chemistry, the Computational Chemist will work closely with the machine learning engineers to extract features from the simulations and use them to train the machine learning models.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Research soil organic matter and their compositions.
  • Investigate various ways to calculate the computational spectra of complex structures of soil organic matter.
  • Design computational models to study various interactions between different molecular components of soil organic matter such as humic  substances.
  • Perform computational simulation and obtain spectra for soil models.
  • Extract various features from the computational models.
  • Collaborate with the team of software engineers to put your models into production.
  • Perform other related duties in keeping with the purpose and accountabilities of the job.

REQUIREMENTS

  • MSc. or Ph.D. in computational Chemistry, Computational Biology, Computational Biophysics or related discipling with the focus on molecular simulations and spectroscopy
  • 2+ years of research and practical experience in molecular simulations techniques
  • Strong knowledge of variation theorem and perturbation theory
  • Strong Knowledge of DFT approaches and quantum mechanics methods
  • Knowledge of MD-DFT approaches would be considered as an asset
  • Familiarity with open-source computational chemistry software and chemical databases
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis (such as experiment design and hypothesis testing)
  • Proficiency with the Linux environment
  • Familiarity with Python or R programming languages would be considered as an asset
  • Knowledge of the Agile project management methodology.

QUALITIES

  • Aptitude for interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Capable of performing research on best practices and communicating results to a non-expert audience
  • Ability to apply domain knowledge to ambiguous and novel situations
  • Project management, collaborative, and technical leadership skills

LOCATION

  • This position is remote, preferably based in Vancouver, BC but open to anywhere in Canada.
