As a Senior Test Engineer on the Ample team, you will help solve complex challenges involving electric vehicles, robotics and smart battery technology.  You will act as Ample’s in-house expert on test methods, instrumentation, data collection and analysis. You are high energy (“hands-on”), passionate about EVs and Batteries and enjoy working in a startup environment!  The Ample team is small, passionate, highly capable and eager to have like-minded individuals join.  If the technology doesn’t exist, we’re not afraid to envision a path to success and then build it, while always keeping in mind it must be designed for reliability, affordability and easy deployment.

What You'll Do:

  • Act as in-house expert on test methods, instrumentation, data collection and data analysis in electric vehicle battery packs and power electronics
  • Assess and define standard test protocols
  • Troubleshoot various systems using electrical measurement equipment including power supplies, oscilloscopes and multimeters
  • Define accelerated test methods for battery packs and power electronics
  • Work with design engineers in electrical, mechanical and software engineering to identify design issues and needed improvements
  • Specify / maintain new test equipment; conduct setup and calibration
  • Collect and analyze data using numerical data analysis tools
  • Create test reports and communicate test results to the rest of the engineering organization

What You'll Bring:

  • BS in Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical or Automotive Engineering or related field
  • Must be fluent in both Japanese and English
  • 5 years experience in Electric Vehicle (EV) testing and development
  • Hardware: Experience with high power, high voltage battery pack test setups (Aerovironment, AVL, Arbin, Maccor)
  • Software: Matlab/Simulink, Python, data analysis scripting
  • Proven exp. with automotive communication protocols (CAN, LIN)
  • Hands on design failure mode and effect analysis (DFMEA) & a track record of solving difficult engineering challenges in a fast-paced, startup environment
  • Knowledge of EV industry test protocols (3, ECE R100, USABC, SAE 2929, FMVSS, GB)
  • Independent, comfortable working with little supervision
  • Experience in project management and coordination of multiple activities

Bonus:

  • Experience with battery safety / abuse testing including: nail penetration, fire resistance, immersion (per GB 38031)
  • Experience with Functional Safety requirements (per ISO 26262)
  • Experience with EMI / EMC testing (per ECE R10)
