Job Description:
BeZero has pioneered rating technological carbon removal projects, and has seen a significant growth in the interest in rating biochar and other biomass-based carbon removal credits.
As a Biochar Sector Lead, you will lead BeZero’s biochar rating’s work, by personally rating post and pre-issuance biochar and other biomass-based carbon removal projects and supporting other rating scientists in doing so. You will lead on continuous improvement of our biochar rating methodology, internal processes and thought leadership. You will report to our VP, Carbon Removal and with time manage a small team of carbon removal rating scientists. You will have the opportunity to engage with project developers, conduct site-visits, attend events such as Biochar Summit and Carbon Unbound, and present BeZero externally.
We are looking for a motivated individual with an investigative mindset, passion for climate solutions, and existing experience and expertise with biochar specifically, or biomass related projects designed to reduce or remove carbon emissions, in particular on the topics of biomass sustainability, biomass feedstocks uses and decay, life cycle assessment of biomass-related products, pyrolysis and related process, application of biochar.
This role will be focused on researching the science and evidence behind different types of projects. You will continue to build our database of evidence, ratings and content streams.
Responsibilities
Conduct ratings and assessments of biochar and other technological carbon removal projects
Analyze the economic viability of biomass-based removal projects, considering factors such as development costs, operational expenses, and revenue streams
Assess sustainability of biomass feedstocks
Expand and develop our ratings & analytical models
Prepare though-leadership pieces such as blogs, webinars, responses to consultations and research reports
Manage a small team of rating scientists
Establish strong collaborative relationships with other BeZero teams such as Product, Policy and Data teams, as well as external parties such as policy makers and project investors
Attending conferences and events, representing BeZero Carbon
Our ideal candidate’s will:
This candidate will have an academic background in either natural sciences (such as Chemistry / Biology / Earth / Natural / Climate Sciences), or engineering, preferably at masters or doctoral level
Existing experience and expertise in biochar or bioenergy, including knowledge on topics such as biomass sustainability, biomass feedstock uses, pyrolysis or similar processes and biochar
Personal drive for quality in carbon markets
This role demands strong communication skills, both written and verbal, as you will interact with internal and external stakeholders on a regular basis
Have a solid research background and analytical skills
Be comfortable speaking to high-level clients and external stakeholders
Have a strong understanding of the voluntary carbon market and the risks carbon projects face
