Reports To: Controls Engineering Manager

Location: On-site full-time; Waterbury, Vermont

Your Impact

The Controls Design Engineer is part of the engineering and design team that builds and delivers our engineered solutions. Work is primarily based out of our Waterbury, Vermont office. However, you will be required to travel to the customer's project site during system installation and the commissioning phases of a project.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities  

 

Control System Design & Client Collaboration

  • Design and program control systems for grid-scale energy storage projects.
  • Work closely with clients to translate requirements into clear project specifications, including scope and deliverables.
  • Develop and define communication data point lists for customers and SCADA interface.

 

Programming & Testing

  • Program PLC and RTAC logic controllers using IEC 61131 languages (ST, FBD, LD).
  • Write and execute Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and On-Site Acceptance Testing (OSAT) plans.
  • Assist with the design and review of electrical/controls design drawings and equipment lists.

 

System Troubleshooting & Standardization

  • Troubleshoot electrical, controls, and AC/DC inverter power systems.
  • Coordinate modifications and corrective actions with engineering and production teams.
  • Standardize logic modules and data structures to enhance efficiency and coding consistency.

On-site Support & Commissioning

  • Travel up to 20% for on-site project commissioning and system support.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for existing installations.
  • Maintain quality and safety standards throughout project execution.

 

Qualifications

  • Education: A degree in engineering (preferred), with a focus on controls, electrical, or software engineering.
  • Experience: 2-4 years in PLC design and programming; experience with analog/digital PLC I/O circuits and industrial protocols (Modbus/TCP or DNP3) is a plus.
  • Skills: Strong electrical troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving abilities; proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and CAD drafting (preferably SOLIDWORKS).
  • Industry Knowledge: Experience with electrical power systems, grid-scale inverters, or battery energy storage is advantageous.
  • Professional Attributes: Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, strong written and interpersonal communication, self-motivated, and a collaborative team player.

 

Work Environment 

  • Effective Communication: Strong verbal communication skills to interact with customers, vendors, and colleagues clearly and professionally.
  • Hearing and Vision: Must have normal hearing and vision capabilities, with or without corrective lenses or hearing devices, to effectively perform job duties.
  • Manual Dexterity: Excellent hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills are necessary for tasks involving wiring, assembly, and the installation of DIN-rail devices.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to occasionally lift and move objects weighing up to 25 lbs., as well as perform tasks requiring physical exertion.
  • Fieldwork and Travel: The role may require occasional travel for fieldwork, including activities such as hiking, working on construction sites, handling heavy equipment, and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for specific tasks.
