About Redwood Materials

Redwood Materials was founded in 2017 to create a circular supply chain for electric vehicles and clean energy products, making them more sustainable and driving down the cost for batteries. We鈥檙e doing this by developing and deploying new technologies to increase the scope and scale of recycled and sustainable materials in the global battery supply chain.

Senior Membrane Scientist

Redwood Materials is seeking a membrane scientist with extensive experience developing membrane materials. In this role, you will execute performance testing and characterization to identify the best membrane materials for implementation in an electrochemical cell to convert lithium-ion battery waste material into useful products. You will also manage relationships with material vendors and collaborate with suppliers to develop tailored membranes for novel electrochemical cells developed at Redwood Materials. You will collaborate with other electrochemical and mechanical engineers on the team to drive holistic device design, through a pilot demonstration, to a final commercial installation. The ideal candidate will have experience developing membranes across a wide array of material classes (e.g., organic, inorganic, composite) and for a variety of industrial applications.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Drive the selection and testing of membrane materials for a novel electrochemical conversion system.
  • Deliver a technology roadmap to drive membrane development to meet overall system requirements.
  • Conduct internal performance benchmarking experiments to qualify performance and durability of new membrane materials.
  • Execute lab-scale fabrication of new membrane materials.
  • Develop characterization methods and metrology to accurately differentiate membranes for key performance metrics.
  • Manage relationships with membrane suppliers, including collaboration to develop new membrane materials specifically designed for Redwood Materials.

Desired Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience working in the development of membranes or technologies using sophisticated membrane materials.
  • Experience in electrochemical performance testing of membranes for electrochemical technologies, using galvanostatic/potentiostatic measurements, voltammetry, EIS or similar.
  • Experience in materials characterization techniques for membranes and polymeric materials.
  • Experience in design-of-experiments and building models with statistical software, such as JMP, minitab, tableau or similar.
  • Excellent verbal and presentation skills for communicating key findings from test data.
  • A passion for sustainability and making the world a better place!

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work hands on the lab, including standing and operating equipment at a lab bench.

Working Conditions:

  • Environment: office, wet laboratory, chemical plant, outdoor test sites.
  • Exposures encountered: hazardous materials, electrical hazards.
  • Essential physical requirements: working hands-on in a research lab setting.
  • Travel required as needed, less than 10%.

The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
