Manager - Benefits & Absence Administration

Reporting to Director, Benefits & Retirement

Location: Orange, CT

The base salary range for this position is dependent upon experience and location, ranging from $113,000 to $157,000

Job Summary

Avangrid is seeking an experienced Benefits Manager to join our Benefits and Retirement team. Responsible for the administration, operation, compliance, and strategic oversight of Avangrid’s active health and welfare benefit plans (i.e., medical, dental, vision, insurance, disability, voluntary benefits) and retiree welfare plans, as well as our absence management programs (FMLA, PFL, PSL, PPL, Military, etc.).

Key Responsibilities

  • Review, develop, and implement flexible and holistic benefits programs that are diverse, equitable, and inclusive and focused on improving employee outcomes, optimizing costs, and maintaining market competitiveness.
  • Ensure benefits plans and absence management policies are fully compliant with all federal and state requirements (ERISA, IRS, ACA, HIPAA), including applicable plan documentation (SPD’s, SBC’s).
  • Plans, oversees, and coordinates the administration and operation of the active and retiree health & welfare plans to ensure operational continuity, effective cost management, and high quality service levels for our employees and retirees
  • Work closely with legal team, actuary, and consultants to ensure all retirement medical plans are compliant and strategic objectives are met.
  • Implement and oversee the return-to-work (RTW) programs for employees utilizing intermittent leave and related accommodations, including managing ADA requests.
  • Educate employees and managers on company policies related to leave and disability, including developing/reviewing communication and engagement materials .
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of benefit plan budgets.
  • Develop, review, and implement reconciliations, internal control procedures, and process documentation.
  • Manage external vendors and ensure service level agreements are reviewed quarterly. 
  • Support audits, union negotiations and regulatory requirements as needed.
  • Manage, develop, coach, and evaluate a diverse team.
  • Other duties and ad hoc projects as needed.

Must Haves:

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, or related field.
  • 8+ years experience focused on the operation and administration of health & welfare plans and programs for active employees and retirees.
  • 5+ years in supervisory/management capacity
  • Extensive knowledge of federal and state compliance requirements (i.e., ERISA, IRS, ACA, HIPAA), leave management laws and managing absence programs.
  • Experience creating and delivering executive level presentations and communicating to cross-functional audiences and internal stakeholders.
  • Proven track record designing, administering, and implementing various benefits programs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Union experience 
  • Professional certification (i.e., CEBS, CBP, PHR, GPHR, SPHR).
  •  Experience with budget and vendor management.
