What You’ll Do:
As Senior Electrical Engineer/Project Engineer, you will support the development and delivery of projects which will vary in value from $50M to more than $300M. Reporting to the Electrical Engineering Manager, you will support the development, construction, and entry into operation of solar PV and wind power generation as well as energy storage systems, in US and Canada. Working alongside the engineering, construction, development, and other project support teams, you will conduct technical suitability for chosen power generation technology. In addition to this, you will manage electrical interconnection processes/grid integration of new generation facilities, from the feasibility study stage through to market entry.

This role will be based in Toronto, and you will be expected to work from our corporate office a minimum of 3 times a week in line with our hybrid work model.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and direct project engineering firm(s) retained to complete design work and collaborate with the engineering team to review electrical studies and designs provided by such project engineering firm(s).
  • Lead meetings and coordination between contractors. utilities, engineering firms to ensure compliance with requirements
  • Assist in the preparation and review of project technical scope documents, including procurement of major electrical equipment.
  • Assist in the development of capital and operating costs for project Pro-forma in consultation with Northland’s project finance team.
  • Assist project teams in preparing and evaluating EPC contractor and Engineering proposals.
  • Develop inspection plans for electrical infrastructure and direct project field engineers to conduct such inspections.
  • Coordinate equipment supply, electrical installation, testing, and commissioning work by substation contractor, balance of plant contractor, and equipment supplier(s).
  • Collaborate with civil, structural, and mechanical experts to ensure the successful integration of electrical equipment into plants.
  • Coordinate with contractors and equipment suppliers to ensure interfaces between systems are correctly designed and implemented.
  • Coordinate market entry processes including equipment registration and system operator compliance testing.
  • Review acceptance testing and inspection procedures prepared by contractors and equipment suppliers for compliance with contract requirements and industry standards and assist the site quality team with reviewing test and inspection results.
  • Manage contractors and equipment suppliers to ensure system punch lists are closed out.
  • Coordinate construction and handover of substations and transmission lines to the local utility to support the interconnection of projects.
  • Assist the documentation control team to ensure the successful completion of the project turnover to the operations team.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Electrical Engineering degree and professional Engineering designation.
  • Minimum of 4 years of direct and experience in conventional or renewable power, in particular high voltage substations design and construction with a strong emphasis on protection and control systems as well as SCADA. Experience in operations and maintenance as well as energy storage systems will be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of technical interconnection requirements and process for utilities and Canada
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and activities and organize work to meet deadlines
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products
  • Available to travel within Canada and USA. Ability to travel 10-20% of the time.
