Engineer II or Engineer III — Midwest Distribution, Protection, Automation and Control (DPAC) - Distributed Energy Resources (DER)


Note: This position may be filled at either the Engineer II or Engineer III level based on the selected candidate’s experience.


Position Summary:


This position is responsible for providing engineering support for the deployment of distributed energy resources (DER) on Duke Energy's Midwest distribution system. The ideal candidate will play a key role in supporting customer-owned renewable generation, company-initiated DER projects, battery storage, microgrid development, and evolving technologies. This position offers a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of the rapidly growing distributed generation industry, collaborating across multiple departments and regulatory environments while directly impacting the transition to a cleaner energy future.


Responsibilities:

  • Process customer interconnection requests for distributed generation systems, including review of technical documentation, performing impact analyses, specifying protection requirements, reviewing customer single-line diagrams and relay settings, preparing Interconnection Agreements, and witnessing commissioning tests.

  • Serve as a technical resource to resolve customer interconnection issues that arise post-installation.

  • Represent the company on national standards committees (e.g., IEEE 1547) and contribute to the development and maintenance of internal technical standards for interconnection.

  • Provide technical support for Duke-initiated DER projects, including utility-owned solar installations, energy storage deployments, microgrid development, and other emerging technologies.

  • Support regulatory filings, participate in legislative rulemakings, and provide expert technical testimony or support related to DER, interconnection, and net metering policies.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) on DER interconnection for internal departments, including Regulatory, Distribution Planning, Legal, Field Engineering, and Customer Account Management.

  • Perform technical studies such as fault current analyses and load flow studies to assess system impacts from DER interconnections.

  • Contribute to DER standards development, both internal and external to the organization.

  • Develop positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities across functional groups.

  • Support the company's goals and represent the company positively and professionally.


Basic/Required Qualifications for Engineer II:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering obtained from an ABET accredited program, OR a Master’s Degree in Engineering in lieu of a B.S. in Engineering.

  • Minimum of two (2) years of relevant engineering experience.


Basic/Required Qualifications for Engineer III:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering obtained from an ABET accredited program, OR a Master’s Degree in Engineering in lieu of a B.S. in Engineering.

  • Minimum of four (4) years of relevant engineering experience.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam (FE).

  • Knowledge of electric utility distribution systems and protection theory.

  • Demonstrated experience with DER technologies, interconnection standards (e.g., IEEE 1547), and utility interconnection processes.

  • Experience supporting regulatory or legislative activities related to distributed generation.

  • Experience performing load flow and fault current studies.

  • Understanding of project management principles.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to collaborate across departments and with external regulatory agencies.

  • Experience working with diverse individuals across departments and industries.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.

  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.  

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.


Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility.


Specific Requirements:

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
