<h1>Background</h1>The shipping industry is notoriously difficult to decarbonize, accounting for ~3% of global CO2 emissions. If it were a country, it would be the 6th largest emitter in the world (ranking just above Germany).Recent global regulations from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) require ships to reduce their CO₂ emissions or pay a carbon tax on every ton emitted. However, there are currently no commercially viable clean solutions available. Alternative power sources such as hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and onboard batteries are still 10–20 years away from maturity for large ships, and energy-efficiency solutions can only reduce emissions by 5–10%.<h1>About Seabound</h1>Seabound is a marine emission management platform that focuses on capturing CO₂ emissions from ships.We are building a retrofittable device that traps the CO₂ from a ship’s exhaust gas. It has the potential to be one of the simplest, safest, and most affordable solutions for zero-emissions shipping.Founded in late 2021, Seabound recently completed the world’s first port-based CO₂ capture demonstration at the Port of Long Beach with STAX Engineering and Wallenius&nbsp;Wilhelmsen, achieving a ~95% efficiency CO₂ capture rate. To date, Seabound has raised $6.8M from top-tier investors including Lowercarbon Capital, Y Combinator, Eastern Pacific Shipping, Elemental Impact, and Collaborative Fund; and won £2.2M in UK government grants through the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition.<h1>Roles and responsibilities</h1>Join our innovative and rapidly growing clean-tech start-up as an R&amp;D Engineer, playing a key role in developing the next generation of carbon capture systems for shipping.As an R&amp;D Engineer, you will design, build, and test lab- and pilot-scale systems to enhance and optimize our carbon capture and sorbent processes. Working closely with our Senior Research Scientist and Research Engineer, you will lead the design, fabrication, and commissioning of scaled-down versions of our core units for research and quality assurance.You will also create experimental setups to explore new sorbent manufacturing and testing methods, as well as other experimental systems that expand Seabound’s capabilities as a marine emissions platform. Your work will directly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and play an essential part in accelerating the maritime industry’s transition to net zero.You will be part of a small, highly collaborative team with access to a fully equipped R&amp;D workshop, including fabrication tools, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems.<h3>What You’ll Do</h3><ul><li>Design, construct, and commission lab-scale systems (from gram to kilogram scale) for carbon capture and sorbent testing.</li><li>Plan and conduct experimental campaigns, including test design, integration, operation, and data analysis to validate process performance.</li><li>Review scientific literature and collaborate with suppliers to prototype new approaches for sorbent development.</li><li>Develop supporting test rigs and tools to accelerate performance evaluation and improve testing throughput.</li><li>Identify and investigate research questions based on knowledge gaps—both for current products and potential future technologies—and translate them into practical, testable solutions.</li><li>Document and present experimental findings, insights, and recommendations to the broader team.</li><li>Work collaboratively with mechanical, software, and operations teams to integrate hardware, sensors, and control systems into functional prototypes.</li></ul><h1>Skills and requirements</h1>We’re looking for someone who has:<ul><li>A degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline, with 1–3 years of relevant research or industry experience (title and compensation will reflect experience level).</li><li>Strong fundamentals in heterogeneous reactions, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and dimensionless analysis.</li><li>Hands-on experience designing and building experimental rigs, pilot systems, or prototypes.</li><li>Experience or familiarity with integration and testing of electrical systems (low voltage AC and DC only).</li><li>Experience or familiarity with integration and testing of fluid systems, including selection of valves and fittings.</li><li>Proficiency with CAD tools for mechanical design.</li><li>Basic working knowledge of Python, MATLAB, or C++ for data acquisition, automation, and / or analysis.</li><li>A practical and resourceful mindset — capable of solving complex, open-ended problems with creativity and independence.</li><li>A strong commitment to safety and sound laboratory practices.</li><li>A passion for climate technology and the drive to help decarbonize the shipping industry.</li></ul>The ability to thrive in a fast-paced start-up environment and take ownership from concept through prototype deployment.
