Job Description

Are you ready to rise to the challenge of climate change with the team that will deliver? Form Energy is a U.S. technology and manufacturing company that is developing and commercializing pioneering energy storage technologies to enable the electric grid to run on 100% renewable energy, every day of the year.

Supported by leading investors such as Breakthrough Energy Ventures, ArcelorMittal, TPG Rise, MIT’s The Engine, and others, we share a common belief that low-cost, multi-day energy storage is the key to enable tomorrow’s zero carbon electric grid. Driven by our core values of humanity, excellence, and creativity, we are deeply motivated and inspired to create a better world. We need talented, hardworking individuals who share our goal of tackling the challenge of climate change. Do you want to work with us today to build a better tomorrow?

Role Description
We are looking for a Staff Engineer to aid in the product development effort of Form Energy’s long duration energy storage system.

Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Manager, you as the Staff Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the design, prototyping, and testing of mechanical interfaces within the battery cell and to the battery module while meeting functional requirements. Such interfaces include cell sealing, weld joints, liquid delivery systems, effluent gas steam management, sensor implementation, and cell/BMS interfaces.  You will also participate in first-of-a-kind build activities, vendor engagement, and design for manufacturing.

Finally, you will contribute to performance and durability test data interpretation. This role will require direct mechanical design experience with battery cells or similar electrochemical devices (e.g., fuel cells or electrolyzers). If you're ready to go straight to the problem and build batteries that can make a difference, what are you waiting for?

What You'll Do:

  • Design, prototype, and test battery cell components to meet critical interface requirements, such as seals, welds, liquid handling, sensors, gas treatment, and on-module electronics
  • Participate in component integration events, fabricating and testing first-of-a-kind battery prototypes to validate cell and module design choices
  • Lead critical vendor engagements and collaborate with manufacturing engineers to transition battery designs from prototype to high volume production
  • Collaborate with the Systems Engineering team to co-develop thermal, fluid handling, electrical, balancing, and controls systems
  • Champion for safety, especially in the development of new laboratory processes

What You'll Bring:

  • 8+ years experience designing electrochemical energy storage or conversion systems (i.e., metal air batteries, bipolar plates, alkaline batteries, PEM fuel cells, electrolyzers)
  • 5+ years experience designing and developing an electrochemical product in industry
  • Proficiency in CAD (Solidworks)
  • Experience with optimizing mechanical design, balance-of-plant systems, and interdisciplinary interfaces of electrochemical systems
  • Experience optimizing electrochemical device design for manufacturing and cost-down
  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, electromechanical, or related field
