Job Description

Electric Hydrogen’s mission is to create an abundant and decarbonized material future. Our outstanding people are our most important asset and will allow us to deliver hydrogen from renewable electrolysis for heavy industry, at prices below fossil fuels.

Our team is looking for a Plant Operations Engineer who will commission and operate Electric Hydrogen's Prototype Plant – our first large-scale electrolysis system – located in San Carlos, CA. You will join a multidisciplinary engineering team tasked with bringing the system to life and creating the procedures for its long-term operation. It will be exciting, varied work, providing an opportunity to develop novel technology in a fast-paced, startup environment.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Commission the electrolysis plant. Bring industrial process equipment such as pumps, valves, chillers, and power supplies online; troubleshoot issues as they arise.
  • Be the primary operator of the plant. Control the system via HMIs and monitor instruments that measure pressure, flow, temperature, and voltage.
  • Be the standard of safety. Exemplify safety-first culture when approaching the variety of hazards inherent to electrolysis and hydrogen generation systems.
  • Develop test plans in collaboration with the plant engineering team. Build schedules and manage the plant as a resource for providing design validation data.
  • Collect and analyze data generated during testing. Data will come from multiple sources with varying degrees of automation; distill this into actionable information and present to engineering stakeholders in reports and presentations.
  • Create standard operating procedures for routine plant operations that will serve as the basis future operator training.

The role will require knowledge of multiple disciplines (electrical, mechanical, chemical, and controls). Above all else, the job demands a continuous focus on safe and reliable plant operation. A successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering; mechanical or chemical engineering strongly preferred
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience operating large fluid handling, compressed gas, or chemical processing systems in an industrial setting
  • Experience working with SCADA systems; interacting with equipment via HMI and logging data to a historian for analysis
  • Experience performing hazard and operability analysis (HAZOP) or similar hazard assessment process for new systems or plants
  • Working knowledge of common industrial process equipment, instrumentation, and sensors
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering diagrams and drawings from a variety of disciplines
  • Experience writing procedures and training plant operators

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience operating high pressure hydrogen or oxygen systems
  • Experience with design of experiments and statistics driven data analysis tools such as JMP
  • Experience automating tests and data analysis tasks in a scripting environment using high-level programming languages such as Python
  • Hands-on electrical experience troubleshooting sensors and low voltage circuits
  • Previous experience working in a startup environment
