Job Description

Electric Hydrogen’s mission is to make molecules to decarbonize our world! Our outstanding people are our most important asset and will allow us to deliver hydrogen from renewable electrolysis for heavy industry, at prices below fossil fuels.

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer who will work on Electric Hydrogen's Prototype Plant – our first large-scale electrolysis system – located in San Carlos, CA. You will develop novel design iterations for the electrolyzer balance of plant using your knowledge of fluid and gas processing systems. You will report into the Manager of Test Engineering.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop mechanical design concepts for process skids and piping assemblies. Use good engineering judgment to balance safety and reliability with the need to speedily refine the design of the prototype.
  • Perform engineering analysis to support your designs, including calculations for flow rate and pressure drop, heat transfer, and static structural loading.
  • Select process equipment for fluid systems including pumps, valves, heat exchangers, compressors. Size piping and select appropriate fittings for piping assemblies.
  • Model parts and assemblies in 3D parametric CAD software. Produce drawings for the fabrication of pipe assemblies, weldments, and custom machined parts.
  • Produce bills of materials for equipment and piping.
  • Collaborate with chemical and electrical engineers on interdisciplinary efforts such as hazard and operability studies (HAZOP) and design failure mode and effect analysis (DFMEA).
  • Provide mechanical engineering support to commission new designs and troubleshoot issues identified by plant operators.

As a successful candidate, you will have the following qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering
  • 3+ years of experience as a mechanical engineer working in a relevant industry, such as chemical / petrochemical, oil and gas, wastewater treatment, power generation
  • Experience reading and interpreting engineering documents such as process flow diagrams (PFDs) and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Experience generating fluid system designs from upstream documents in an autonomous environment
  • Familiarity with process equipment common in liquid and gas handling, heat exchange, and compression. Working knowledge of common methods for pipe joining
  • High proficiency and speed in 3D and 2D CAD software packages such as SolidWorks
  • Produce designs compliant with relevant codes and standards, including NFPA, NEC, and Class 1 Division 2 hazardous location
  • Experience working with prototype systems in an environment requiring rapid design and deployment
  • Experience using computational tools including finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for analysis of structural loading, heat transfer, and fluid flow
  • Experience sizing equipment and pipe assemblies for multiphase flow and working with hydrogen fueling and fuel cells.
