Job Description

Our Mission  

SPAN develops products that accelerate the rapid adoption of renewable energy in the home. The flagship SPAN Smart Panel is the first true evolution for the traditional home electric panel, harnessing enhanced technology for metering, monitoring, and control. An expanded product suite of intelligent, integrated solutions radically lowers the cost and complexity of energy upgrades–including solar, batteries and EVs–empowering homeowners to be active, resilient and informed players in the energy market. 

The Role

The Director of Regulated Business and Market Development will be responsible for growing SPAN’s business through developing programs and partnerships that accelerate residential electrification. As part of a quickly growing team, this person will work with a variety of stakeholders, including utilities, state and local regulators/policymakers, energy service providers and other key trade allies to raise awareness of SPAN’s product capabilities and create/secure inclusion in Inflation Reduction Act and other residential decarbonization programs. They will also work closely with the internal SPAN team to build capabilities needed to deploy these programs at scale and maximize our impact.

As Director for Regulated Business and Market Development, you must have:

  • Understanding and appreciation for the experience that consumers have with products in their homes, and bring a customer-first mindset to your work. 

  • Experience with key stakeholders in the energy industry; utilities, regulators, policymakers, energy service providers, advocates, nonprofits and trade groups and understand the hurdles in decarbonization of the energy ecosystem.

  • Creativity, a keen commercial sense and a bias for action

  • A spirit of collaboration and team building and a solutions orientation

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to make complex things accessible to a multitude of audiences

  • Domain expertise through industry experience in one or several of the following areas: residential DSM programs, utility regulation, wholesale electricity markets, state/local policy, consumer products

  • The ability to travel for work trips when in-person presence is important

What You Will Do

As the Director of Regulated Business and Market Development, you will be a thought leader who:

  • Executes with expertise

    • Internally - 

      • Leverage policy and regulatory expertise to inform the company’s go-to-market strategy and support sales efforts

      • Informs our product and service offerings and works cross-functionally to ensure we are delivering what partners and the market needs

    • Externally - 

      • Propose, develop and launch new partnerships and programs with utilities, state/local municipalities, program implementers, etc. based on consumer benefit, product capabilities and ecosystem needs. For example, this could take the form of activating against the HEERHA rebates in the Inflation Reduction Act, developing new panel rebate with a municipality, or working on electrification pilots with a utility.

  • Builds and leverages relationships to get things done

    • Internally - collaborate cross-functionally with a variety of teams (Product, BD, Sales, Ops, Marketing, Engineering, Legal, etc.) to deliver on partnership commitments and mature key internal capabilities. 

    • Externally - 

      • Create trust with stakeholders of all levels as a thought partner and problem solver

      • Develop rapport with other thought leaders and industry experts across utilities, regulatory bodies, energy efficiency implementers and trade groups and form ad-hoc and formalized coalitions as helpful

      • Maintain regular touchpoints with specific partners and stakeholders

      • Manage or provide oversight as is needed for policy consultants

  • Catalyzes market transformation

    • Work with stakeholders to advance changes to best practices, policy, and regulation to accelerate efforts to decarbonize buildings.

    • Build SPAN's brand as an industry expert - speak at conferences, participate in panels, testify before regulatory bodies, etc.

We are looking for the following qualifications:

  • 10+ years of work experience, including partnerships with utilities or energy service providers, or other policy/market development work in the energy/climate change space

  • Experience working with executive-level positions in either the public or private sectors, and ability to connect with stakeholders of all levels

  • Highly motivated and ability to excel as a self-starter

  • Content knowledge in climate, energy policy, and/or building electrification

  • Adept at collaborating cross functionally with a track record of execution on complex partnerships and new products, programs and services

  • Experience negotiating and managing contracts

  • Ability to apply both creative and critical thinking to complex policy and political situations

  • Exceptional communication skills, written and verbal, with the ability to synthesize complex and nuanced ideas

  • Experience working in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial setting with tight deadlines

  • Strong commitment to the mission, policies and goals of SPAN

The U.S. base salary range for this position is $143,000 - $200,000 plus benefits, equity and variable compensation for Sales-related roles. This range represents SPAN’s good faith estimate of competitively-priced salary for the role based on national, real-time industry data from companies of a similar growth stage. This range reflects minimum and maximum new hire salaries for the role across US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by location and individual factors including relevant skills, experience and education or training. This range correlates to the relative level of the candidate we believe we need for the role and may require an adjustment for candidates of a different level.
