About the position

We are looking for an experienced software engineer/architect to take technical ownership of critical parts of our cloud products to scalably deliver value to our customers. You will analyse user, product and business requirements, in collaboration with our Product Department, understand the deficiencies of our existing implementation and the output of our AI research, identify the best technologies to use and produce technical designs to be implemented by our development teams. We take a hands-on approach, therefore any design effort should include prototyping, especially when new technologies are involved.

Our products are used by shipping company engineers and captains to optimise the technical operations and navigation of their vessels based on our in-house developed AI and optimisation algorithms. You will need to gain a good understanding of the domain and our research output to design improvements that make our back-end infrastructure scalable and cover our customers’ needs.

Our cloud platform is hosted on AWS, and we are in the process of transitioning our infrastructure to container orchestration using EKS. Our back-end services are implemented in Java, using the Spring boot framework, with front-end in React, AI services in Python using TensorFlow, and optimisation using Rust.

• Experience of technical ownership of scalable enterprise software, preferably cloud software with interaction between diverse microservices. This will include multi-year experience as a senior developer and/or software architect.
• Ability to analyse requirements and research output in a highly technical domain and produce high-quality scalable designs. Broader STEM background or experience would be helpful.
• Experience of software architecture, system definition, algorithm design and design patterns
• Experience in startup and/or B2B SaaS environments
• Ability to work under pressure and with frequently changing priorities
• Ability to communicate technical concepts to non technical people
• Solid knowledge of and experience in:
  • REST-ful architectures and web-APIs
  • Kafka and distributed streaming platforms
  • Relational DBs and Query Optimisation
  • NoSQL DBs
  • In-memory data structure stores
  • Container technologies
• Experience with the programming languages and technologies we work with is preferred
