Role Description:

Form Energy is hiring mechanical engineer II to join our systems engineering, enclosures team in our Berkeley, CA, facility. This role will contribute to developing our energy storage system's product enclosure and auxiliary systems design.

This position is part of a growing team. It will ideally suit a mechanical design engineer at the beginning of their career with a couple of years of demonstrated industry experience in 3D modeling, 2D drafting, supporting engineering builds of enclosure designs for mechanical systems, cost-down efforts, and taking a design into high-volume production. You're eager to dive deep into technical challenges, can work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities, and are willing to roll up your sleeves, do hands-on prototyping, and work collaboratively with cross-functional and multidisciplinary teams.

If this sounds like the perfect opportunity for you, apply today! It's an exciting opportunity to contribute to a sustainable future by scaling our multi-day energy storage system.

What you'll do:

  • Develop CAD model and create enclosure drawings for fabrication

  • Build prototypes to validate the design of component assemblies, range of motion of doors, and load capacity of components

  • Design and test of battery energy storage system (BESS) enclosure components for performance & functional requirements, optimizing for manufacturability, material weight, and cost

  • Perform trade studies for cost & schedule to inform project teams in making design decisions

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams for interface designs and participate in vendor engagements with manufacturing engineers

  • Perform compliance studies/testing for purchased components

What you'll bring:

  • Degree in mechanical engineering or related field and 1-3 years of industry experience in mechanical design

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD and 2D drafting using SolidWorks or a similar program

  • Direct experience with optimizing the mechanical design with interdisciplinary interfaces

  • Experience with a variety of fabrication techniques and manufacturing processes (sheet metal is a plus)

  • Well-developed communication, collaboration, and engagement skills

  • Knowledge of first-principles modeling and design and optimizing for manufacturing and cost-down

  • Highly desired - experience in product development within an early-stage environment and experience in energy storage, battery systems, renewable energy, or related industry
