We are looking for a Research Analyst to join the Grid Edge research team within Wood Mackenzie’s Power & Renewables practice. The Grid Edge team consists of leading analysts covering some of the most cutting-edge topics in the energy transition, including transportation and building electrification, microgrids, distributed energy resource participation in wholesale and retail markets, demand flexibility, and grid modernization. Our research and thought leadership inform the strategies of key players throughout the energy industry, driving innovative business models while hastening the energy transition.

The Analyst will work collaboratively across the Grid Edge team, supporting analysts with data gathering and organizing tasks and directly contributing to research reports. This will involve assembling and maintaining datasets on data center and virtual power plant project deployments, utility programs, corporate deals, policy developments, and similar. The Analyst will support the integration of this data into research reports, dashboards, and other data platforms. All of this will be done in close collaboration with of other members of the Grid Edge team and other research teams.

The Analyst will be encouraged to stay up to date on key developments in the topics they are involved in and deepen their expertise over time. This role is a great opportunity to get your hands dirty with real-world commercial data while working closely and learning from a team of analysts with diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise.

Main responsibilities

  • Support multiple research initiatives in parallel, from initial desk research to slide development
  • Perform data gathering, validation, and entry, and oversee data analyst teams doing this on our behalf
  • This includes data on project developments, technology deployment and cost, policy developments, and corporate activity, and other areas, as needed. This is accomplished through:
    • Announcement tracking, regulatory filing review, and other desk research
    • Correspondence with companies
    • Collaboration with other data analysts and teams

  • Support the preparation of research reports, consulting reports, presentations, and client deliverables, in particular developing PowerPoint slides and Excel data sheets
  • Develop and maintain client-facing dashboards and support dataset integrations into Wood Mackenzie data platforms

Qualifications

  • A Bachelors degree in a social, physical, or environmental science, or policy
  • 2+ years of professional experience in the energy or data center industry
  • A passion to gain expertise in and to support the energy transition, and a genuine curiosity regarding clean energy technologies and business models
  • Strong research abilities, and the willingness to learn how to mine public datasets, regulatory filings, financial disclosures, secondary research reports, and project announcements
  • A desire to spend your days deep in data, particularly data gathering and validation
  • Good working knowledge of Excel
  • Strong written and spoken English language skills
  • Strong attention to detail, with a commitment to go the extra mile to ensure that data is both accurate and complete
  • Excellent time-management, including the ability to manage projects in parallel and to balance short- and long-term priorities
  • Willingness to work with a distributed team, based in other countries 

Nice to haves:

  • Knowledge of the data center industry or artificial intelligence
  • Basic understanding of the US power sector, including the role of utilities, energy markets, regulators, developers, and distributed energy resources
  • Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases, including table design
  • Experience with python, including, Jupyter notebooks, data scraping, and data science libraries (pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, scipy, etc.)
  • A basic understanding of corporate finance
