Role and Responsibilities
We are seeking a full-time Engineering Support Technician/Technologist.

 

Under the supervision of the Director of Hardware Engineering within our Aquaculture Intelligence (AQi) division, the Engineering Support Technician/Technologist will collaborate with our Engineering team to drive the development of innovative products. This team member will play a pivotal role in building, testing, and deploying our latest systems, working closely with Engineers, project managers, and field teams. Work will be based in the product development lab in Boston, MA, but will include supporting the production facilities in Bedford, NS (CAN), and Belfast, Maine as well as working with R&D field teams in Panama, Mexico, and Hawaii.

 

We are looking for a detail-oriented professional with a strong understanding of electronics and control systems, who demonstrates exceptional organizational skills and accountability. The candidate must have a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn and the flexibility to come up with creative solutions. The candidate must be adept at the following:

  • Providing hands-on technical support to engineering teams in a fast-paced product development team
  • Performing prototype assembly builds of electronic assemblies and cables into underwater housings
  • Maintaining and organizing the Boston lab space
  • Troubleshooting problems and performing root cause analyses
  • Performing PC board level inspections, rework and troubleshooting where appropriate
  • Performing tests in the field, installing and maintaining equipment at customers’ sites
  • Executing test plans, documenting test data and publishing test reports
  • Marking-up drawings and documenting the wiring of 1-off prototypes for future reference
  • Troubleshooting equipment on field sites remotely or on location
  • Troubleshooting and repairing hardware returned from the field which is outside of the knowledge of the Customer Success team
  • Preparing training materials such as training manuals, maintenance checklists, and tooling lists for production staff
  • Training production staff on how to build newly developed products
  • Troubleshooting and assisting production with issues relating to AQi products
  • Training Customer Success teams on how to perform maintenance/repair of products returned from the field
  • Making requisitions to order parts/lab supplies as required
  • Following best practices and ensuring that safety is built into our standard operating procedures and equipment both in Boston and in Bedford
  • Maintaining internal test equipment and assembly jigs
  • Implementing small continuous improvement projects and processes changes
  • Researching new techniques or technologies to help inform future product developments
  • Generating ideas to improve existing products and processes
  • Providing shipping/packaging support for engineering related parts
  • Traveling internationally on occasion for specific reasons such as supporting prototype testing at client sites or helping with design for manufacturing evaluations at the manufacturing facilities as part of new product introductions

Required Skills and Experience

  • Soldering (including SMT rework) and PCB assembly
  • Knowledge/familiarity with schematics, mechanical drawings, and PCB diagrams
  • Experience with wire harnesses, cable assemblies and splicing methods including potting and heat shrink
  • Ability to use crimp tooling
  • Mechanical assembly skills such as drilling, routing, cutting
  • Ability to operate electrical testing equipment (Oscilloscope, DMM, etc.)
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities under tight timelines
  • Ability to collaborate with others and work in a team-based environment
  • Flexibility to learn new skills and take on new tasks, including areas outside core area of expertise
  • Effective oral communications with strong technical writing skills 

Education

Candidates are required to have an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology or a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology.

 

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • 5 years of experience
  • Altium or relevant CAD experience
  • Knowledge of Python for automating collection of test data
  • Familiarity with Solidworks 3-D modeling software
  • Spanish speaking
  • Green belt or black belt in Lean Manufacturing practices
  • Knowledge of Marine Electrical systems, underwater systems, and saltwater environments
  • Experience working in the Ocean Technology sector
  • Knowledge of PLCs and VFD (variable frequency drives) Siemens and others
  • Experience with high voltage power distribution up to 480VAC
