Who You Are
The Chemical Plant Inspector is responsible for conducting thorough inspections of equipment, piping, structures, and systems within a chemical manufacturing facility to ensure compliance with safety standards, regulatory requirements, and company specifications. This role plays a crucial part in maintaining the integrity and reliability of plant assets, preventing failures, and ensuring a safe operating environment.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Conduct Visual and Non-Destructive Examinations (NDE):
- Perform visual inspections of vessels, tanks, piping, valves, and other equipment for signs of corrosion, erosion, cracking, leaks, and other defects.
- Utilize NDE techniques such as ultrasonic testing (UT), radiographic testing (RT), magnetic particle testing (MT), liquid penetrant testing (PT), and eddy current testing (ET) to assess material integrity and detect subsurface flaws.
- Interpret NDE results and generate detailed inspection reports.
- Inspect and Verify Equipment Integrity:
- Inspect pressure vessels, heat exchangers, storage tanks, and piping systems according to applicable codes and standards (e.g., ASME, API, ASTM).
- Verify proper installation and functionality of safety devices, such as pressure relief valves and rupture discs.
- Monitor and document corrosion rates and material degradation.
- Inspect welding quality and adherence to welding procedures.
- Ensure Compliance with Regulations and Standards:
- Adhere to all relevant safety regulations, environmental standards, and company policies.
- Maintain accurate inspection records and documentation for regulatory compliance and auditing purposes.
- Stay up-to-date on industry best practices and changes in codes and standards.
- Generate Inspection Reports and Recommendations:
- Prepare detailed inspection reports outlining findings, observations, and recommendations for corrective actions.
- Document inspection results using appropriate software and databases.
- Communicate effectively with maintenance, operations, and engineering personnel regarding inspection findings and recommendations.
- Participate in Plant Turnarounds and Shutdowns:
- Conduct inspections during plant turnarounds and shutdowns to identify and address potential issues.
- Assist in the planning and execution of inspection activities during these periods.
- Safety and Environmental Stewardship:
- Maintain a strong commitment to safety and environmental protection.
- Follow all safety procedures and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Identify and report safety hazards and environmental concerns.
- Calibration of inspection tools:
- Calibrate and maintain inspection tools according to manufacturers specifications.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
- Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in engineering, materials science, or a related field preferred.
- Experience:
- 8-10 years of experience in inspection within a chemical, petrochemical, or related industry.
- Experience with NDE techniques and equipment.
- Familiarity with relevant codes and standards (ASME, API, ASTM).
- Certifications (Preferred):
- API 510 Pressure Vessel Inspector Certification.
- API 570 Piping Inspector Certification.
- API 653 Tank Inspector Certification.
- ASNT Level II or III certifications in relevant NDE methods.
- Skills:
- Strong understanding of chemical plant equipment and processes.
- Proficiency in NDE techniques and interpretation of results.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to identify defects.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in using inspection software and databases.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Ability to work in various weather conditions and confined spaces.
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
- Ability to wear respiratory protection and other PPE.
The starting base pay for this role is between $125,000 and $157,000 at the time of posting. The actual base pay depends on many factors, such as education, experience, and skills. Base pay is only one part of Sila鈥檚 competitive Total Rewards package that can include benefits, perks, equity, and bonuses. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
