­­Energy Finance Analyst – Steel Sector (2 Positions)

The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) is seeking two professionals to join our Global Steel Team:

 

·       Energy Finance Analyst – Steel Sector (Preferably located in India)

·       Senior Energy Finance Analyst – Steel Sector (Preferably located in Australia)

 

Both roles focus on analysing the financial and economic aspects of the steel sector, with a particular emphasis on technology transitions, energy and resource security, and decarbonisation. These are remote positions, and candidates may be based anywhere in Asia Pacific, preferably in India or Australia.

We are looking for professionals with expertise in global steel manufacturing, energy finance, and industry decarbonisation. The Energy Finance Analyst will focus on data-driven research and financial analysis, while the Senior Analyst will take on additional strategic and leadership responsibilities. The ideal candidates must possess a commitment to IEEFA’s mission to accelerate the transition to a diverse, sustainable, and profitable energy economy.

In the context of the steel sector, this means critically analysing the threats and opportunities faced by steel manufacturers, including their supply chain of iron ore, coking coal, electricity procurement, hydrogen and scrap steel. Due to the ongoing need to meet growing steel demand whilst addressing energy and resource security and the need to decarbonise industry. The Analysts will conduct and disseminate economic and financial analysis with the aim to influence policies and investment in the steel sector.

IEEFA is a rapidly-growing NGO/not-for-profit that conducts research and analysis on financial and economic issues related to energy markets, trends and policies. Headquartered in the United States, IEEFA has a team of analysts and communications personnel located across the globe. Our dynamic teams work collaboratively the across regions and different research areas including the coal, gas, and electricity markets.

Roles and Responsibilities

For Both Roles:

·       Research, interpret, and publish financial and industry data related to the steel sector.

·       Analyse technology developments in low-emission steel and their implications for the sector.

·       Assess the impact of iron ore, coking coal, electricity procurement, hydrogen, and scrap steel on the steel supply chain.

·       Conduct financial analysis, financial modelling, and market analysis in Excel.

·       Draft, format, and proof reports, submissions, and press releases.

·       Create and update PowerPoint presentations for public, media, and industry briefings.

·       Monitor energy and finance news, including downloading press articles, annual reports, and investor presentations.

·       Review and provide commentary on company strategies, policies, and technologies in the steel sector.

·       Track financial performance, company investment trends, technology developments, and strategic announcements.

·       Liaise with stakeholders, think tanks, and industry representatives to foster collaboration.

·       Build relationships with industry, government, regulators, and financial contacts to enhance research impact.

·       Provide insights to the media and respond to requests to contribute to public discussions.

·       Other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities for the Senior Energy Finance Analyst:

·       Lead high-level research projects and drive strategic insights into the steel sector transition.

·       Act as a subject matter expert in external engagements with industry leaders, investors, policymakers, and financial institutions.

·       Oversee the development and dissemination of research reports and publications.

·       Provide guidance and mentorship to junior analysts, supporting professional development.

·       Shape IEEFA’s thought leadership by influencing policy discussions and investment strategies in the steel sector.

Required Qualifications

Energy Finance Analyst:

·       1 to 4 years of experience in finance, energy, engineering, or a related field.

·       Bachelor's degree in finance, economics, engineering, or relevant experience.

·       Strong analytical, financial modelling, and quantitative skills.

·       Excellent writing and communication skills, demonstrated through reports and publications.

·       Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Box, and ClickUp (or equivalents).

·       Self-motivated and able to work independently in a remote environment.

Senior Energy Finance Analyst:

·       7+ years of experience, including in strategic finance, investment analysis, or industry research.

·       Bachelor's or Master’s degree in finance, economics, engineering, or relevant experience.

·       Demonstrated ability to lead projects and engage with senior stakeholders.

·       Strong understanding of energy transition, decarbonisation strategies, and investment risks in the steel sector.

Compensation and Benefits

Full-time, 12-month fixed-term contract with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement. We offer a market-competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package.

The remuneration range for the senior analyst is AUD 155,233 to $187,350 base plus super for locations in Australia. Pay rates are based on education, skill, experience level and internal equity.

Locations outside of Australia: IEEFA aims to offer comparable salaries, benefits, and leave to employees living outside of Australia in line with our fully transparent compensation framework. More information can be requested by contacting IEEFA’s HR team.

Work Schedule

Full-time, 5 days/week with occasional evening or weekend work as required. IEEFA is an international organization, so some late evening, early morning and weekend work will be required due to time zone differences and for on-site event coordination.

Travel

Some travel is required. All global team members attend IEEFA’s annual conference and regional or international team retreat.

Physical Demand and Work Environment.

Must be able to work for prolonged periods at a computer. Computer work can involve repetitive motion, eyestrain, back, and neck strain.
