ABOUT TROUT UNLIMITED

Trout Unlimited (TU) brings together diverse interests to care for and recover the rivers and streams on which we all depend. We are a national organization with 350,000 members and supporters organized into over 400 chapters and councils nationwide. Our dedicated grassroots volunteers are matched by a respected staff of organizers, attorneys, policy experts, restoration practitioners, and scientists, who work out of more than 25 offices across the country.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is an exciting opportunity to participate, develop, and lead impactful habitat restoration projects to improve salmon and steelhead habitat in northern Puget Sound Watersheds, focusing initially on the Snohomish and Stillaguamish River Basins.

This Project Manager will work with project partners and TU volunteers and begin by focusing on fish passage field work and data collection at potential fish passage culvert barrier sites, eventually expanding to other types of restoration projects, including instream and floodplain restoration. The Project Manager will steward multiple instream restoration projects from start to finish: developing project concepts, securing project partnerships, obtaining project funding, and managing project implementation.

TU has secured two years of funding for this position. The successful applicant will work with TU staff and stakeholders to secure additional funding for project activities and to cover core operational costs to sustain the program in future years.

The location for this position is flexible within the North Puget Sound region, including a work-from-home option. The Project Manager will be required to travel throughout Puget Sound River Basins and to occasional meetings and conferences outside the region.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This position will develop and manage successful habitat restoration and reconnection projects. These duties include securing project funding from local, state, and federal grant programs, and facilitation/oversight of project phases in collaboration with stakeholders and project partners.

Specifically, this position will:

  • Work closely with TU staff, project partners, stakeholders, and communities to develop valuable salmon and steelhead habitat restoration projects.
  • This position will initially focus on fish passage project development in the Snohomish basin. This includes organizing and leading field work with volunteers and project partners to survey culvert barrier sites utilizing WA Dept. of Fish and Wildlife’s Fish Passage Inventory, Assessment, and Prioritization Manual protocol.
  • Work with local/regional partners and TU staff to fundraise for both program and project support, including identifying potential funding sources, drafting grant proposals, and developing relationships with funders.
  • Manage and complete project planning, design, permitting, on-the-ground implementation, and monitoring.
  • Attend regular habitat restoration-related workgroup meetings related to salmon and steelhead recovery.
  • Perform administrative duties, including grant writing, reporting, contracting, invoicing, and budget management.
  • Participate in WA TU Council and TU Chapter meetings, and engage TU grassroots, as needed.
  • Execute media work to highlight project success, including collaboration with TU’s Communications staff and coordinating with partner organizations.
  •   Bachelors or advanced degree.
  • At least 3 years of experience working in the field of natural resource management, fish conservation, and/or aquatic habitat restoration.
  • Experience with river restoration principles, methods, and practices, including understanding engineering design/construction concepts. Restoration project construction and management desired.
  • Experience with project permitting related to aquatic restoration projects and in-water work (i.e., federal, state, and local permits).
  • Budget management experience.
  • Understanding of natural resource management issues relevant to the conservation of trout and salmon and their habitats in Washington State.
  • Demonstrable success working with diverse stakeholders and building partnerships.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to problem-solve and think creatively.
  • Ability to travel throughout Puget Sound and occasionally beyond for staff meetings, conferences, etc.
  • Valid driver’s license and own vehicle.
  • Experience using MS Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
