Climate Jobs are Booming

As we wrote a few weeks ago, climate jobs are booming. Jobs in the clean energy sector grew by more than 10% over the past two years, outpacing the general U.S. economy, according to EESI and the World Economic Forum. In 2023, clean energy jobs grew at more than twice the rate of the broader labor market, supported by government investments in climate initiatives like the Inflation Reduction Act.

More recent numbers show that green energy jobs, in particular, saw a tremendous bump thanks to Biden’s IRA bill. As Bloomberg noted in September, job growth across the US economy last year was only 2%, while clean energy jobs grew at 4.2%. The climate sectors that saw the biggest bump included electric vehicles, renewable energy, transmission, distribution, and storage jobs. Solar and wind grew even more, with 5.3% and 4.5% growth in each.

Heatmap took a closer look at the Department of Energy's jobs report that came out in September. It's the first one to give us a good snapshot of how much climate jobs have grown, and the report highlighted three key takeaways: Clean energy jobs are on the uptick (as are fossil fuel jobs), unions are playing a larger role in clean energy jobs, and DEI is faltering in the climate jobs sector.

How to Get a Climate Job in 2024

The demand for green skills is skyrocketing. According to the World Economic Forum, job postings requiring these skills were expected to grow 22.4% between 2022 and 2023, outpacing what was currently available on the market. Job seekers with green skills were 29% more likely to be hired than those without​. But how do you get those green skills?

The Conventional College & Advanced Degree Path

There are plenty of training and college-level programs that offer upskilling for climate work. If you’re a student, programs like Environmental Science or Environmental Studies, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, and Sustainable Development can be great paths to pursue to get a job in climate.

There are also plenty of tech tracks that students can pursue to find work in climate tech. Degrees like those in business and finance, as well as engineering, biosciences, and more, can set students up for a successful career in climate, too. Advanced degrees are highly valuable in the climate space, too, so if you're a professional considering going back to school to pursue a master's or doctoral degree, it can pay dividends to look at how your interests and experience intersect with climate work. As I said before, any job can be a climate job.

Government Training, Upskilling, Fellowships and Networking Events

There are also a plethora of new training programs for people who are no longer in school but looking to make a transition to a climate job. With the IRA came a bounty of new training programs supported by the Department of Energy (DOE) that are aimed at helping those in conventional jobs upskill for new, green jobs that are coming online.

There are a wide variety of options out there based on your current skill set. For example, if you're in the renewable energy sector and looking to upskill for solar or wind power, you can check out the Department of Energy’s Federal Energy and Manufacturing Workforce Training Program page to find the right program for you. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory also offers training programs.

In the farming and agricultural sector, the US Department of Agriculture offers upskilling and training programs like the Working Lands Climate Corps program and the USDA Climate Change Fellows fellowship for those in agriculture and food production.

The Future of the Climate Sector

As the world grapples with the impacts of climate change, from rising temperatures and more violent storms and droughts to rising sea levels, the climate sector is only going to grow.

The climate tech industry in particular, is projected to be a major driver of employment, with innovations in areas like smart grids, electric vehicles (EVs), energy storage, and AI-driven climate solutions, according to the World Economic Forum.

Jobs related to climate resilience and adaptation will be increasingly vital. Professionals like urban planners, civil engineers, and disaster management experts will be needed to create resilient cities and infrastructure. There is also a growing demand for sustainability professionals and climate finance experts who can guide investments toward sustainable projects and ensure compliance with new regulations around carbon emissions and climate risk.

Finally, there is the long-term commitment and investment that governments like the US have made to secure the future against climate change. Policies like the Inflation Reduction Act have helped companies and investors plant the flag on climate innovations, and with those innovations come plenty of upskilling opportunities.
